Future Crytek titles will be multi-platform, no more PC exclusives

The PC Play magazine has released an English version of an interview it did with Cevat Yerli, president of the German Studio Crytek, which is well known for developing Crysis. In the interview they discuss the success and failures of Crysis, but more importantly the state of the PC gaming industry.

Yerli was asked about the risk of going PC exclusive with a high-profile title, and replied with: “It is certainly. We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis. We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin, a chart leading that is not desirable. I believe that’s the core problem of PC Gaming, piracy. To the degree PC Gamers that pirate games inherently destroy the platform. Similar games on consoles sell factors of 4-5 more. It was a big lesson for us and I believe we wont have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future. We are going to support PC, but not exclusive anymore.”

So, future releases from Crytek are likely to see Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions as well. Good news for console gamers, but not good news for the PC industry.

Yes! Awesome news. This means that FarCry 2 will go multi-platform. I also heard that they are porting Crysis over to the PS3. Anyone else hear anything about that? If it's true, I might just get that version instead. At least I won't have to download a million patches with the PS3 version.

Revan006, this news doesn't mean anything about Farcry 2.
Ubisoft have the rights to the Farcry name, not Crytek, and Ubisoft are developing Farcry 2, and if it goes multiplatform, it will be because Ubisoft decide to make it multiplatform.

Also, one reason not many people bought Crysis is probably because it has quite high system requirements, and also (as Stardock commented), it doesn't really have much mass market appeal. Crysis is aimed at hardcore gamers who have good systems, probably also the same people most likely to pirate games. It's more a case of Crytek shooting themselves in the foot by aiming at a market which is the most risky. You don't see EA complaining about high piracy rates for The Sims.

Indeed, It is a risky target audience that Crysis was going for, and not many PC have high end PC's that will be able to support the game on good settings, let alone full.

They just keep on NOT seeing the BIGGER reason (besides the admittedly big one of piracy), which is THE LACK OF SERIOUS APPEALl for the gamer to go out and buy. Just remember old SIERRA and LUCAS ARTS pc titles that had no need for an more expensive "special edition" in order to give away tempting content items within the package... and get the picture !!!!
