2K Games announces Civilization V for PC

2K Games today announced that Sid Meier’s Civilization V, the latest entry in the highly anticipated Strategy series, is in development at Firaxis Games for PC. Civilization V promises to reinvigorate the turn-based strategy genre with a new engine built from the ground-up for Civ V.

Players are introduced to an entirely new combat system, deeper diplomatic interactions and a cavalcade of expanded features that deliver a fully immersive experience providing hours of entertainment as players build and defend their empire on their quest to become the greatest ruler.

Pearce: Would be "satisfied" with Battle.net as Blizzard 'Facebook'

Blizzard Senior VP Frank Pearce admits that Battle.net being seen as videogames 'Facebook' is "pretty ambitious", but it's their hope.

They'd at least settle for it adopted as that for Blizzard games and the community, as the latter is "really what's most important" to the studio.

Developer 4A Games has dismissed rumours that Metro 2033 shares technology with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s X-Ray engine, as they aren't similar.

GSC's engine for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. "just doesn't scale" to modern day demands says former GSC, Oles Shishkovtsov. 4A Engine "radically different".

Capcom has apologised to Resident Evil 5 fans for uploading the wrong DLC content, giving them Costume Pack 2 stuff instead of Pack 1.

Not much of a war crime there, but this might be. Lost Planet 2 has had "significant" content snipped because of Xbox 360 DVD limitations.

PC Assassin's Creed 2 requires Internet, knows it's "controversial"

Ubisoft is moving ahead with their new form of anti-piracy for PC, one where they require future games to login or they will fail to start up.

Assassin's Creed 2 for PC is one such title. Ubi feels this system is "justified" by the "advantages" offered, like Cloud-stored save files.

During the DICE summit in Las Vegas, Disney Interactive Media overlord Steve Wadsworth added fuel to Sony's motion control confusion.

Wadsworth called it "Sony's Gem", but the corporate giant already dismissed this as a prototype name. Hints at Epic Mickey on 360/PS3.

Eat, Sleep, Play guy David Jaffe has said "for the love of f***ing god," get more commercial titles out on to XBLA and PSN. Like EA's BF1943.

The danger is titles getting lost in all that digital content, but there's "that danger at retail," or even car shopping. XBLA "in more danger" than PSN.

Square Enix chief tech officer Julien Merceron says just because you have middleware doesn't mean you get away with "less programmers".

It's what caused The Last Remnant to suffer so on Xbox 360. This is one of the "traps with middleware", to underestimate fine tuning them.

God of War guy David Jaffe has admitted their PS3 title Calling All Cars was "a mistake," saying that "nothing matched up" in the PSN title.

They had a "casual theme with a hardcore mechanic" on a $500 machine, that's what went wrong. Jaffe blames his market "misperception".

Fantasy army slayer Ninety-Nine Nights returns this year, and thanks to Konami it will be heading to European Xbox 360s as well. Hooray.

It was thought to only be retailing in Japan, but we thirst for more epic action it seems. Ninety-Nine Nights II has two-player online co-op.

Brian Farrell is big boss of THQ, and he says their E3 offering this year will have jaws dropping. Plus they've got MMO Warhammer 40k.

Yes they will "actually show" some of their MMO. Alongside that is Red Faction 3 and Saints Row 3, with "more of Homefront" too. Sounds great.

Blizz begins StarCraft II closed beta, "final stretch of development"

The closed beta for Blizzard's latest StarCraft instalment is finally up and running, with gamers having "started to receive invitations".

This is the "first phase of the beta" with multiplayer up for testing, as well as peaks at the new Battle.net. They want "concentrated feedback".

Motorbikes going really fast around tracks? Next month say Capcom as MotoGP 09/10 releases on Xbox 360 and PS3, with a demo earlier.

It packs online races for up to 20 players with votes for the track, bikes and laps. 2010 season content will go up shortly after its release.

Developer Rare's Killer Instinct may "someday" return to the gaming world on Xbox 360, teases Microsoft Game Studios exec Ken Lobb.

The guys "want to make" more KI, but "aren't working on it today" Lobb revealed at X10. Elsewhere, Midway titles have vanished from XBLA.

SCEA's Rob Dyer believes that Sony and PS3 "do better for our publishing community" than what the Xbox 360 does. Way more first-party too.

Bungie's next Halo is "the last one, Rare rarely puts out anything," and Molyneux has "his Fable stuff"... but they don't have first-party studios.

IBIS Capital director Tim Merel says for the "majors" it "makes perfect sense" to build up their big franchises in the "short-to-medium term".

Long term though, and they tread down "a very risky path." If we're all about "innovation" to drive our growth then constant sequels "won't cut it."

There's been some activity on the Jumpgate Evolution front, namely a US community manager let go, but that means they're getting close.

At least that's what the departing dev revealed. Jumpgate was due out last year, but was delayed by user feedback, causing major changes.

Motomu Toriyama is a Final Fantasy XIII designer and writer, and he says the franchise will never go first-person, though third-person...

That's a different thing altogether, as it's a "more realistic fit". Toriyama-san admits FFXIII doesn't have "basic RPG" like "towns or shops."

Nine more EA titles are to lose their online servers announces the publishing giant, with new server closures set to start this March 16th.

The Godfather, Lord of the Rings: Conquest, Mercenaries 2, The Simpsons - all lose online play. Some closures are region specific however.
