Microsoft holds 2009 as a "breakthrough year" for the Xbox 360 too

It's not just Sony and the PS3 that enjoyed 2009, but Microsoft and the Xbox 360 as well. They peddled 1.3 million new 360s in December.

That's what the NPD US figures show. $4.8bn was spent by Americans on the Xbox 360 in '09, with $1.1bn of that last month alone.

With the NPD report out, Sony confirms that Naughty Dog's brilliant sequel to Uncharted has managed to punch through the 1m barrier.

Its October debut month in the US saw 575k copies move into gamer hands, winning many accolades and raking in critical acclaim. Good boy.

PlayStation 3 didn't mind 2009, not one bit, especially its time on Santa's lap when it shifted 1.35 million in the US during December alone.

Sony saw a PlayStation revenue of $5.1 billion for last year, and that's 26 percent of the US total. It's been a "turning point" for PS3 says Sony.

It's that time again when the NPD gets all number crazy, showing us what consumers blow their cash on. 2009 raked in $20.2bn in US game sales.

That plump figure though is down 8 percent from 2008's $21.4 billion. NPD says big sales "a positive move" for games to recover in 2010.

An anonymous source from Rockstar Vancouver has said how troubled Max Payne 3 is, much like San Diego's Red Dead Redemption.

They also allege that "virtually everything" from the 'Rockstar wives' letter "applies" to their experience at Rockstar Vancouver. Oh dear.

Ubi delays "brilliant" Splinter Cell: Conviction, wants it "awesome"

Publisher Ubisoft broke some more hearts recently, announcing that the long awaited Splinter Cell: Conviction is to be delayed yet again.

The top bosses want it polished more, as 'looking brilliant' just doesn't cut it. It was due February 26th but now lies somewhere in FY2010.

Yamauchi: Gran Turismo 5 uses "about 80 percent" of PS3's power

Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi of developer Polyphony Digital has revealed his latest creation rivals Uncharted 2 in PS3 efficiency.

The PlayStation 3 tech has a "very high peak performance," and the more you experiment with it "the better it performs." No US or EU date yet.

Creative Assembly dates Napoleon: Total War

Creative Assembly has confirmed that Napoleon: Total War will be released on February 23, 2010.

Mark O'Connell, community manager for the Total War series, confirmed the release date on the official forums.

Sony America boasts it enjoyed the "single highest selling month" for PS3s and its games since it launched, all thanks to December 2009.

PlayStation Network meanwhile celebrated too, having its "single highest revenue month", with Final Fantasy VIII topping the download chart.

The third dimension is seeing something of a renaissance among media consumers, with more and more films churning out in support of it.

Gaming too is following suit, albeit more slowly. Xbox 360 is "fully 3D capable" but Microsoft are "unsure" of the 'interest level' at the moment.

According to art director Isamu Kamikokuryou from Final Fantasy XIII all that cut stuff from the game could likely make a whole new game!

What did gamers lose out on? A full zone around Lighting's home, a secret Nora resistance base and an amusement park Nautiuls with a zoo.

Microsoft launches Kodu beta for PC, unveils 'Lips: Party Classics'

That strange game-making tool Kodu, talked about way back when, has just got its public beta for PC. We're all developers now, sort of.

Microsoft has also announced a new Lips game for Xbox 360, subtitled 'Party Classics'. It's got Avatars in it, with unlockables for them.

Ubisoft "refocusing efforts" on Xbox 360 and PS3, much less casual

Yves Guillemot, big boss of Ubisoft, has pledged they'll be devoting more resources to the next-gen consoles and their "major" franchises.

The love affair with casual gaming is over, with less "exposure to the DS" planned. Ubi drops fiscal sales target from EUR 1bn to 860m.

EA CEO Riccitiello "at risk" of losing post, investors 'are unhappy'

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey has said John Riccitiello's "inability to execute" well this year could spell the end of his CEO reign at EA.

It's those shares not rising enough, compared with rivals THQ and Activision. Michael Pachter notes investors "feel betrayed" by bosses.

1C says retail "forcing PC games out", entirely digital by "Q1 2011"

Darryl Still of publisher 1C blames retailers for stuffing boxed PC titles at the "back of the store" with hardly "any exposure" to consumers.

He claims there's "still demand" but retail care little. It's the "limited" options driving publishers digital. PC games all digital by 2011.

Thanks to the online CV of BioWare's Rob Bartel, we know the developer has an action title hidden away somewhere with multiplayer infused.

Bartel is both Principal and Lead Multiplayer Designer for this secret action gem. This could be an all-new IP, or something revived perhaps?

Warner Bros has announced a deal with the Sesame Workshop to produce a new line of videogames, mostly likely all motion based.

This first generation of parents who "grew up as gamers" value the industry. Natal and such "developmentally appropriate" for preschoolers.

The western release of Final Fantasy XIII is no longer a fairytale because developer Square Enix has announced they've finished it, at long last.

Director Motomu Toriyama says one thing they focused on was facial animations, they're "completely synchronised" with English dialogue.
