Houser: Lack of maturity in industry gives us "enormous freedom"

Rockstar's Dan Houser has said not having a matured and "codified" medium lets developers exercise their creativity and freedom.

Unlike with film, TV and books which have become "so structured" in their methods, videogames enjoy a freeform environment. Houser says he wouldn't trade it in for "respect" any time soon.

According to Arvind Bhatia with Stern Agee, 30 cents out of a total 60 cents were WoW earnings in the fiscal ending December.

That's round about $400 million in total. Blizzard announced 11.5 million subscribers are now in the MMO roster in December. Acti-Blizz has a lot to thank Azeroth's populace for.

No merry tidings for Sony, hardware and software declined in Q3

The quarter ending December 31st was not one of joy and peace to all mankind for Sony Corp. Overall sales compared with last year's Q3 were down 32.2%.

That's a fall from 581 billion to 393.8 billion Yen. PlayStation hardware fell 16.06mil to 12.06mil. Despite PS3 software up 57%, total software declined from 105.2mil to 86mil. Ouch.

Valve release Team Fortress 2 patch, steams away game exploits

The crazy fun that is the online shooter Team Fortress 2 has its latest patch update now available over the Steam network.

It addresses exploits and sprinkles some fixes in. Valve has also released a new version of WWII shooter Day of Defeat: Source.

Is this footage from Alan Wake? Someone from Youtube has uploaded a video that claims to contain gameplay footage from Alan Wake that was to be shown at GDC 2009.

The video is very poor in quality, although it shows first-person footage of Alan walking around in a snowy forest with a pistol in his hand. The video stops when he picks up a shotgun found in a cabin.

SCEA have revealed a list of top downloads over the PlayStation Network with news that The Force Unleashed is the top demo.

The Hooded Top, Resi Evil T-shirt and Summer House battle it out for supremacy in PlayStation Home. The Dark Knight is top movie with Family Guy cinching top TV show.

Lionhead "not working" on Fable 2 for PC, at least not yet anyway

On the official Lionhead Studio's forum, "Community Dude" Woody has revealed no team is busy on a PC port for the Xbox 360 exclusive.

Fable II has done tremendously well on the console and a version for PC was never vehemently ruled out but is expected by fans and we press types eventually.

EA sets new date for BattleForge, coming March 24th

Electronic Arts and Phenomic announced today that its upcoming fantasy strategy / virtual trading card game BattleForge will release on March 24th exclusively for the PC in North America and Europe.

In BattleForge, players use virtual trading cards to build the perfect army and lay waste to their foes. The cards are the tools of war each representing a unit, building or spell that is conjured directly onto the RTS battlefield. They enable you to customise and combine factions, and play with a unique army of your own design. With no base building and production queues BattleForge players are instantly immersed into fast-paced RTS action.

Producer Ben Judd affirms the decision to exclude online sessions in Bionic Commando Rearmed was the right thing, would have been too much trouble.

Admitting he did want online co-op, developer GRIN warned it would be "a huge amount of risk" and so left it alone. He noted "additional pains" wouldn't be worth additional sales.

CEO Ray Muzyka of BioWare Corp, has told CVG that he "can see" the industry heading toward a single platform future.

There "are valid reasons" for a single mighty behemoth but there would of course be "some issues", like branding and hardware fans. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo playing nice?

The upcoming 'Entrenchment' expansion to the space faring real-time strategy has been pushed back a little Stardock announce.

Expected last year the expansion was delayed until February 4th, but is now coming a week later on the 11th. 'Entrenchment' adds mighty starbase forts to Ironclad's gem of a game.

The corporate giant is adamant that support for Games for Windows Live is strong and will continue despite the deep cuts surrounding the division.

They also shored up their verbal support for Microsoft Games Studios. New General Manager Ron Pessner will now lead the company's "Windows gaming service efforts".

The European PS3 release of Capcom's Street Fighter II Remix has been blocked again, having been submitted for tests twice already.

According to reports the game must be "redone" and Capcom already have another version ready to submit "hopefully within three weeks." It's US and Japanese counterparts went live last year.

Pace admits it's "something we're looking in to," but the future of Ensemble is already to eclipse. Despite that they're "committed to supporting the franchise," no set plans yet he adds.

Michael Pachter, Wedbush Morgan analyst, has said that Xbox Live members are a "proverbial goldmine" for the Netflix service.

Pachter believes "super-normal levels" of subscriber growth to Netflix will continue for a while longer and they should expect "as many as" 1mil new members in the next year.

Speaking with Famitsu magazine, Capcom's Keiji Inafune drops talk of sequels to zombie chopper Dead Rising and icy cold Lost Planet.

More importantly he reveals they've got their multiplatform thinking caps on. Lost Planet has already touched PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 but Dead Rising hasn't shuffled over from Xbox 360.
