With the collapse of UK retailer Woolworths there's been a lot of trouble brewing, but now more so as its distribution arm still has stock they didn't pay for.

Microsoft want their gear back, as do EMI, and can under "retention of title" law if the stock hasn't been paid for or in exchange for debt owed. It's better than having it sold cheaply.

Even with the economic downturn, the gaming industry held strong in 2008 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 recorded the biggest year in Xbox history, with more consoles, games and online experiences sold than any previous year. The Xbox 360 unit sales climbed to 28 million consoles worldwide - expanding the product's lead over Sony PlayStation 3 to more than 8 million units.

Hideo Kojima, speaking with Famitsu, has said Kojima Productions must work to ensure their games can "translate globally."

He reveals they're currently "reviewing everything" they can to see how they can match the rising success of western studios. They need to appeal to more than just the home Japanese market.

Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has published a New Year post on the official Gears of War 2 forums, which reveals more information on the previously announced patch for Gears of War 2.

"As I mentioned before the break we've been working on a major title update for Gears of War 2," said Rein. "This update will address bugs and exploits as well as add some new achievements related to downloadable content. We don't have an exact date for it but all indicators are it will go live within January. If that changes we'll let you know."

Developer Digi-Guys sent a letter to GameCyte to assure the industry that more information on its upcoming Wardevil Chronicles game for the PlayStation 3 will be revealed this year.

"We'll be releasing new material in 2009, but when/how is in the hands of our Publisher - therefore, we must keep to their schedules. WarDevil is progressing to plan - it has a long development process as we're creating an Engine, a Game & Short Movie and each of these elements can take a lot of time on their own." said a representative.

Peter Molyneux has said 2009 doesn't have much in the way of greatness, at least compared to what '08 had in its war chest.

For 2008, writing for the BBC he says how Rockstar's GTA IV "was a real moment", how the Nintendo Wii "got even better" and how Sony's PS3 was "disappointing to say the least."

There aren't many air combat games worth their packaging these days and it seems THQ agreed, and made the devs redundant too.

Juiced Games, bought by THQ back in '06, was working on this new aerial action title but THQ execs deemed the whole project just a little too dangerous to undertake right now.

You might remember Pier Solar, the upcoming RPG that is being developed specifically for the Megadrive in celebration of the console's 20th anniversary, and is pinned for a release sometime in 2009.

If you're worried about not being able to play this game because you don't actually own a Megadrive, don't worry, Water Melon Development has told CVG that once development has finished on the Megadrive version, they might start thinking about giving Xbox 360 owners a chance by releasing a remake or re-release on the Xbox Live Arcade.

An article on PlayStation.com features leading industry figures talking about what they are looking forward to in 2009 for the PlayStation 3, with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves saying that turning a profit is Sony's main goal for this year.

"The most important thing for us as a company in the very short term is for us to start making money," said Reeves. "This is a pledge that was made last March and is something that we are still very much on target to achieve."

Microsoft today revealed the Xbox 360 sales data for Christmas 2008, showing that it was the biggest sales period ever in the brand's six-year European History, with sales of Xbox 360 almost double those of Christmas 2007. The press release claims that eight million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold in Europe, the Middle East and Africa up to the end of 2008, widening its lead over PlayStation 3 in the region to more than one million and setting the scene for further growth in 2009.

GfK-ChartTrack data shows that Xbox 360 was the fastest-growing console of 2008, with sales in the fourth quarter of 2008 over double that of the same period in 2007, spurred on by a mix of value, great games and entertainment, and the recently-launched New Xbox Experience.

Beautiful Game Studios' Roy Meredith has spilled to CVG that Championship Manager is a major victim of swashbuckling software pirates.

However he doesn't believe DRM is the way to go and in fact feels that "to compete price-wise", not having to pay royalties after all, will better serve the franchise.

At first glance it looks like just another company looking to sue the trousers off another, but Worlds.com is gambling big and declares war on the virtual.

NCsoft has apparently 'dissed' Worlds.com's patent, number 7,181,690: "System and Method for Enabling Users to Interact in a Virtual Space". They own the MMO?

Sony has been hard at work to trim the cost of its next-gen console, that being the cost to themselves, not to us the consumer.

The first generation cost $690.23 each to make according to iSuppli, based on mid-2007 figures. The second PS3 generation has slimmed down to $448.73, thanks to better tech.

Jonathon Blow, creator of Braid, has blogged that he expects the XBLA smash hit to arrive sometime this quarter for PC, and soon after for MAC.

It wasn't released during Christmas because "blockbusters started coming out" and would likely bury it. Still "no plans" for any other platforms unless Sony bites, reveals Blow.
