Shops "essentially defrauding the industry" with pre-owned sales

David Braben, founder of Frontier and creator of Elite, has criticised the way retailers are handling videogame sales; he strongly believes its becoming a danger to studios.

His main gripe is that the shops aren't "distinguishing between pre-owned and new," meaning sales data is becoming useless. Braben wants a two tier system for games.

The fiasco with those scrolling number tickers over on Wall Street has caught up with Electronic Arts; they're booting out 6% of the workforce.

$310 million was their net loss reveals the publishers third quarter posting, this retail "slow down" has EA a little skidish. Riccitiello admits they're "cautious" for the immediate future.

Sony updates PSN inventory, now peddling Mirror's Edge demo

A full updates list has been released and a fully playable demo of EA's Mirror's Edge has been included. Tom Clancy's EndWar and WarHawk are demos too.

There's add-on stuff for Civilizations Revolution and Soulcalibur IV, plus eight new downloadable tracks for Rock Band. Mega Man 9 Customised Themes anyone?

The Soviet invasion of our desktop hasn't gone quite as planned for EA as some have come up against serial key issues. Some won't work, and others are missing a digit.

EA admits to their "misfortune" that some manuals misprinted "leaving one digit off." Some other keys were just rejected but they've updated their system backend to fix that.

Command and Conquer BattleCast Primetime goes to London, Live at 7:30 BST tonight

On August 15, 2007, history was made as the first ever online, franchise-specific, video-game channel was born with Command & Conquer TV and its flagship show, BattleCast Primetime.

Now, a year later, the show will be going live for the first time as a 2 hour live event as BattleCast Primetime goes to London to kick off Red Alert 3 and EA's be the one event.

Double Fine title Brutal Legends has yet to find a publisher following the Activision Blizzard merger and their decision not to publish the title. An article in Variety reports that "tensions are running high between Double Fine and Activision Blizzard" over the heavy metal action game as a new publisher is sought.

Saints Row 2 for PC pushed to '09, "external company" handling it

Volition has confirmed that Saints Row 2, which is available on Xbox 360 and PS3 now, is being delayed till next year for its PC release.

While the game is a port it "doesn't mean the code can be just copied over," packaged up and shipped out the door. Volition is working closely with the PC version devs.

Sony has "most to lose with this current generation" says analyst

DFC Intelligence senior technology analyst and president Wanda Meloni has argued that the PS3 is not likely to "break even" across its lifetime with current losses per unit.

Also troublingly for Sony, DFC expects that their market share will fall to between 40 and 50 percent by the end of the current generation, down from the golden era of PS2's 67.

Atari to deliver "an entirely new chapter in the Riddick saga" in '09

Since Sierra effectively imploded when Activision and Blizzard got together, Atari decided to pick up the pieces of The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.

Originally it was intended as a remake of Butcher Bay but Atari has decided to make it an entirely new experience with "intense online multiplayer combat", a first for Riddick.

New Elder Scrolls game "potentially" for 2010, still no plans for Wii

While speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Bethesda's Paul Oughton has revealed that the developer is hoping there new Elder Scrolls will arrive in two years.

He also explained that while the Nintendo Wii and DS have made great strides, Bethesda is still "not that interested" at the moment; Xbox 360, PS3 and PC is where it's at.

The Beatles back catalogue licensed to Harmonix's Rock Band

An announcement is due today to make the official declaration; they will hopefully give hints to what era of the groups music will be Rock Band fodder.

This is a mini-major victory over Activision's Guitar Hero which has been trying to get a hold of the elusive licensing rights for themselves. For now though we play the waiting game.

Microsoft unveils "LIVE Starter Pack" at $99 for Arcade owners

The pack includes a 60GB hard drive, a headset, Ethernet cable and three months paid Gold membership to Xbox Live. No news on a European price or a release announcement.

It's designed to get owners of the Xbox 360 Arcade bundles involved in more main stream games, though I'm sure Microsoft doesn't begrudge their loyal XBLA junkies.

Empire: Total War looks gorgeous and with the addition of naval battles it's more than likely to explode the bar of standard for the series extremely high.

Sony's game divison doing slightly better, still leaking cash though

The accountants over at Sony must have one heck of a prescription bill at the end of the month but at least the games division won't be giving them such a headache.

Revenue has managed to creep over 10% from last year but losses are still likely to sting for a while. PS3s shifting off the shelf into gamers hands has helped big time.

Activision has announced on the official videogame website that the beta for the latest Call of Duty has now gone live on PC.

There's still a chance for fans to get in the beta programme but you'll need to pre-order COD: World At War with GAME (UK) or GameStation (US) to be handed a key.

Activision will be unleashing Jimi Hendrix and The Raconteurs as downloadable content soon after the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour this November.

Jimi Hendrix will come with three master tracks and so will The Raconteurs. The DLC will be available on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. World Tour is expected November 7th.

Lionhead's secret game project to be revealed "early next year"

Previously known as project 'Dimitri', Lionhead Studios' top secret new game has been hinted at from Peter Molyneux before as being truly ground breaking.

A Lionhead representative has told VG247 that we'll be able to see what all this fuss is about in early '09. The game is said to be the result of a successful experiment.

Twilight Creations have teamed up with Big Rooster to splatter brains and gorge on guts, presumably they'll then get to working on the videogame.

The Zombies!!! game is expected for next year and could eventually include releases on "the Nintendo DS and Wii systems." It's a tile-based game plus zombies; it's therefore cool.
