SimCity suffers disastrous launch

SimCity's launch has been a disaster, and chiefly due to its always online nature. Gamers have had trouble installing the game; even gamers installing from disc couldn't complete installation without some online files. Those who did install the game waited on long queues just to play - even if they wanted to play solo.

We're getting periliously close to condemning the lives of thousands as we're given the keys to many cities next week when the all-new SimCity releases for PC. Maxis would like to see us a little more educated.

Roads in SimCity are even more important now than ever before, given that all simulation aspects are tied to them, so Maxis' Ross Treyz explains their functions and how to upgrade them.

Another Q&A session between Maxis and Will Wright, the creator of SimCity. This time its lead designer Stone Librande grilling the original Sim Mayor for answers on his likes of the new Maxis creation.

Will Wright reiterates how this new SimCity has let him 'come back' to the series and have fun. He sees himself more 'emotionally invested' in the neighbourhoods, than the Sims.

In the run up to SimCity releasing next week, EA has gone live with LetsAllBeMayor.com with a humours trailer to get us in the mood for 'bad decisions'. The world votes in these "live city building" events.

We're told there are 7 cities spread across 7 days to be collectively voting on. Right now we can decide what gets knocked down for a casino; a park, a police station or a school.

Arma 3 alpha trial available March 5th to pre-orders

Bohemia Interactive begins their alpha trial of Arma 3 next week for those who pre-purchase the game. Four "showcase missions" are a part of it; Infantry, Vehicles, SCUBA and Helicopter.

There are a "limited subset of weapons and vehicles," with two multiplayer scenarios, the scenario editor and mod support. The 20 kmĀ² island of Stratis is home to the Arma 3 Alpha.

Out of nowhere, Will Wright, the creator of many things Sim, has appeared with EA Maxis creative director Ocean Quigley to chat about the latest SimCity. Wright talks about his decade-long fatigue of building cities.

Thankfully his old stomping ground at Maxis has 'reinvigorated' SimCity for him, as Wright describes his likes of the new approach. He says it's "very well struck" between immersion and city planning.

The Sims 3 gets Aurora Skies downloadable content

EA Maxis has announced a new downloadable content pack for The Sims 3 called the Aurora Skies pack, which adds an entire new quaint costal town, featuring "an eco-friendly community, majestic, towering waterfalls that come to rest on the banks of a large, geo-thermal lake and elaborately decorated hot air balloons."

DayZ Mod now officially available on Steam

Dean Hall's DayZ modification for Bohemia Interactive's Arma II has become an officially offering as it gets added to the Steam store page for the military simulator. This is not the standalone release.

The DayZ Mod is available freely with a clear warning that it "requires Arma II: Combined Operations" to be installed, and that the original game and Operation Arrowhead must be run first.

World of Warplanes gets major update

While Star Citizen raised a mere $2.1M on Kickstarter, Chris Roberts' space combat sim Star Citizen continues to raise funds and has passed over $8.1M in total. The game continues to receive funding on the official site.

Bohemia Interactive has released Arma 2: Complete Collection which includes - you guessed it - everything Arma 2 related in a single package. This also provides everything needed for the DayZ Mod.

Operation Arrowhead, British Armed Forces, Private Military Company and Army of the Czech Republic make up the Complete Collection. It's available right now for PC.

EA and Maxis will be bringing an 'enhanced' version of the closed beta February 16th, with beta registrations open until the 11th. It offers the same content as the January beta test, but has been improved.

The latest trailer for SimCity teases the Heroes and Villains content available with the Limited Edition. It shows off crime fighting and hover-laser mayhem from Maxis Man and Dr. Vu.

Sports Interactive's Football Manager series has enjoyed a bumper crop of sales with Football Manager 2013, which studio boss Miles Jacobson partly attributes to their 'time conscious' Classic Mode.

There's also a distinct lack of piracy happening with FM13 compared to past entries, and they've seen growth in regions like Turkey. They're "significantly up" when the market has been down.

Criminal history and "risk categories" now in Prison Architect with 'Alpha 6'

Introversion today release Alpha 6 for Prison Architect and they have made some "big changes" to the prisoners as all now come with an "estimated risk category" based on their criminal history.

They've also given different types of uniform to better show who's a wolf and who's a lamb. It's been a "long term aim" for the team, creating a more 'realistic' imitation of prison life.
