Rift will be the latest MMO to go free-to-play on 12th June

Rift, EVE Online and World of Warcraft were three of the major MMOs to stick with a subscription model, and the former will be adopting a free-to-play structure on the 12th June, according to developer Trion Worlds. According to the studio, gamers "will be able to experience the entire game world; every dungeon, every zone, and every level and get full access to all current and future game updates."

Free-to-play games aren't some fad, they're getting bigger and now starting to nip at the heels. Xfire has stated, in a recent report, that F2P with micro-transactions are becoming mainstream among gamers.

Xfire runs a free chat and server browser client and has seen their World of Warcraft numbers tumble, while League of Legends rockets upward. The "rapid ascension" of F2P took them by surprise.

World of Tanks is rolling its treads once again to Tankfest this year, for the third year running, but this time they're being a lot more pro-active in their attendance. An £80k grant is being given to build a classroom.

It'll mean The Tank Museum in Bovington, England will open up a room dedicated to a "state-of-the-art" education centre to help establish links with schools for "better appreciation" of national heritage.

NCSoft quarterly report shows Guild Wars 2 sales drop, but profits climb

In their Q1 fiscal 2013 report, NCSoft has revealed that Guild Wars 2 has dropped significantly in sales figures, but the company is far from in trouble. A 35% drop in sales from last quarter is revealed.

However operating profit, while down 51% from last quarter, is in fact a huge 348% boost year-on-year as it hits ₩55,512 million. Last quarter held the launch for Guild Wars 2.

Defiance to get 5 major DLC packs in the next year

The SyFy television show Defiance about a post-apocalyptic alien invasion has been picked up for a second season, and Trion Worlds has announced that the cross-media MMO of the same name will be getting five major expansions during the next year.

Trion Worlds will be releasing a major DLC pack for their action-MMO Defiance. A major patch, version 1.020 will tie the game into the SyFy show and add a "Siege" game type; however, the developers are mum on what else the patch will add.

2013 first quarter sees 1.3 million less World of Warcraft subscribers

Activision has revealed in their call to investors that the first quarter of 2013 has resulted in 1.3 million less subscriptions to World of Warcraft. Back in 2010 it commanded 12 million subscribers.

Around 8.3 million today continue their subscriptions to Blizzard's MMO champion, which still holds the Guinness World Record for most popular MMO ever. Activision know it's all downhill.

During the Electronic Arts investor call, Frank Gibeau announced that even though subscribership in Star Wars: The Old Republic has plummeted, the revenue has doubled since it went free-to-play.

Trion Worlds has announced that since its launch a month ago, more than one million accounts have been created for the action-MMO Defiance. The developer states that fans “have truly immersed themselves into the futuristic world of Defiance, with gamers eclipsing major milestones in game, while TV viewers are tuning in at record cable numbers for the first two episodes.”

Bethesda will be letting us mere mortals toy around with The Elder Scrolls Online this August at the annual convention of Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. The studio tease more dates will be revealed soon.

Gamescom runs from August 22nd to the 25th with everyone welcome to attend once you've bought tickets. This will be TESO's first appearance at Gamescom at the Bethesda booth.

En Masse Entertainment has announced that its action-MMORPG Tera is celebrating its first anniversary, having launched on the 1st May 2012. The game recently went free-to-play and rebranded itself Tera: Rising.

Cryptic Studios and Perfect Worlds' MMORPG Neverwinter has finally reached the open beta phase of its development, with Cryptic cautioning fans that it will be treated as such and they want fan feedback.

It's a free-to-play MMO that lets you select between five classes and level them all the way to 60. Also accessible is the Foundry, the game's content creation system.

The transmedia experiment that is Defiance from Trion Worlds is both MMO and TV show. In a bid to tie them closer together a competition is now running for fans to win a place on the Syfy series.

The contest runs from today, April 30th, until Friday next week, May 10th. Those looking for stardom will need to earn the most Ark salvage per hour. You must register and complete Most Wanted pursuits.

BioWare adding Cathar in next update to Star Wars: The Old Republic

The Cathar race is soon to become available during character creation in Star Wars: The Old Republic, but for those with full character slots already there's another option soon to be launching.

Sometime during next month a significant update will release that lets players modify their existing characters, which includes altering their species. Trippy! We can also change armour colours.

CCP touch on World of Darkness at EVE Fanfest

EVE Online developer CCP has been tinkering with World of Darkness, their planned MMO based on White Wolf's Vampire: The Masquerade IP. They've got 70 people working on it right now.

These past few weeks they've been focused on art tools, server-side hardware, vampire powers and social tie-ins. The rest of 2013 will go to clothing, PvE, web-based social tools and item creation.

Today is scheduled maintenance day in Star Wars: The Old Republic, which means the MMO won't be available for a few hours later today as BioWare give it a tune up. They are also releasing a patch.

The Rise of the Hutt Cartel launch brought some new-fangled things to Star Wars, and now BioWare starts tweaking them, like raising the ridiculously low cap on planetary commendations.
