Digital expansion Galactic Strongholds for Star Wars: The Old Republic

BioWare has officially unveiled their free-to-play Galactic Strongholds expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic. It's due this August and features player-owned 'stronghold' housing on various planets.

They're "customizable bastions of personal luxury," and are joined by Guild Flagships. This is the MMO's second F2P add-on and early access is scheduled for June.

ArenaNet is changing up their traits system in Guild Wars 2 by removing the need for profession trainers as each new tier will unlock at no charge, so players can "dive right into the system". Traits levels have changed.

Trait points are also being condensed so at level 80 you have 14 to spend, instead of 70, and points will start at level 30. It's to make the system "much easier" for newcomers.

Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment has just released a behind-the-scenes look at the Snowdrop Engine which powers the upcoming Tom Clancy's The Division, their next generation multiplayer shooter.

Snowdrop is Massive's in-house tech engine and "supports the philosophy of the studio to work better, not bigger," and lend content creators the freedom to explore ideas.

Stronghold Kingdoms hits 3 million player milestone

Firefly Studios has announced that MMORTS Stronghold Kingdoms has achieved over 3 million players since launch, and remains in the top 10 most popular free-to-play titles on Steam, and in the top 50 overall.

They hail it as a "remarkable achievement" for an indie studio like themselves, and it helps support their transition to digital self-publishing. It's kept Firefly 'healthy and growing'.

The next closed beta event for Jagex's Transformers Universe is right on our doorstep and so sign-ups for more Autobots and Decepticons have opened. The closed beta runs Saturday and Sunday, March 15-16.

New Transformers are introduced as Front-Line joins the Autobots and Conduit the Decepticons. The first is "a slugger" while the second "part healer and part killer." Trailers are out for both.

Recently Funcom has been in a spot of trouble with Norwegian authorities as they were suddenly under investigation for 'financial impropriety' and even got removed from the Oslo Stock Exchange.

CEO Ole Schreiner has now spoken out on the matter and said "though it was quite a dramatic event," it was soon over. The police only seized "a handful" of PCs.

NCSoft and Carbine announce June 3rd launch for WildStar, pre-orders next week

The sci-fi action adventure MMO WildStar from Carbine will be officially launching June 3rd, announces NCSoft. Next week from March 19th will begin the pre-order campaign, with early access from May 31st.

Other pre-order bonuses include a Rocket House, a mini-ship house decoration, a 10-slot storage bag and the chance to reserve character and guild names prior to launch.

From March 14th to the 17th you'll be enjoying this beta access before Tamriel opens for all in early April. These keys only work during the beta event starting this weekend.

A veteran band of travelling MMO devs have escaped the "soul-crushing, corporate" tyranny of their former employers, and set up their very own independent empire Citadel Studios. They have their first game in the works.

It's codenamed 'Shards' and the studio is ready with sneak peeks. They take inspiration from Ultima Online, and want to offer a "platform for players to express their creativity."

Blizzard's fifth expansion to World of Warcraft is due this autumn, announces the studio. Pre-purchasing has begun which includes Dread Raven Mount and Dread Hatchling Pet in WoW, and other goodies.

The level 90 boosts are now available to buy standalone, and are charging £40 in the UK. Warlords of Draenor introduce new lands and adventure, as well as garrisons.

Eric Musco from BioWare aired a player housing announcement trailer via the official Star Wars: The Old Public Twitch.tv channel, which concluded with the caption "Welcome Home" in the 40 second trailer.

It starts with the Coruscant skyline but pulls back until we're through a window of a spacious apartment, which is then revealed to be player owned. What about our starships?

Perfect World is releasing the third free expansion to MMO Neverwinter "later this spring" and is taking adventurers to Icewind Dale. All-new PvE campaign as well as a PvP campaign for the first time.

Module 3: Curse of Icewind Dale has just been announced but the studio will be providing weekly updates on the new "iconic region" for Neverwinter, teasing its many new features.

Funcom revenue falls but large-scale MMOs remain "cash flow positive"

The latest investor call from Funcom reveals revenue for Q4 2013 is down from last year's $7.78 million in the same period, to $4.27 million this year. Deferred billings, weaker sales and competition are cited.

However their big MMO projects are "relatively stable" with Age of Conan and Anarchy Online their primary revenue. All their MMOs are providing a "cash flow positive".

The sun is setting on Asheron's Call as creator Turbine announces they are ceasing ongoing production operations, but that doesn't mean the MMO is having its plug pulled, nor is support stopping.

Turbine will continue to address technical troubles and even some balancing, but for the long run they're helping the community set up their own servers.

Enhancements in the works at Wargaming for World of Tanks this year have been teased in a new developer dairy from the studio. They hail 2014 as a "truly transformative year" for the free-to-play behemoth.

They intend to "overhaul the look and feel" throughout the year with these changes, as they pursue a new graphics renderer for greater details to models and environments.

Square Enix and Psyonix announced this morning that closed beta access to its free-to-play third person team based online multiplayer game, Nosgoth, will begin on 27th February.

To celebrate the launch of Nosgoth's closed beta phase, an all-new mode will be made available called Siege. In this mode humans must capture specific locations and keep them safe from Vampires, while the Vampires aim is to hunt down their Human opponents.

Why is Bethesda going down the ole timey route of subscriptions with The Elder Scrolls Online? Bethesda VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines has admitted he's "anxious" about it especially for the Elder Scrolls series.

They plan on regular content updates to feed hungry gamers, and that subs "fit best what we wanted to do," which is to provide "meaningful content support" regularly.

Blizzard has confirmed that character boosting in World of Warcraft will be sold as a separate service at $60, which they feel is necessary given Warlords of Draneor offering one level 90 boost.

They didn't want people buying multiple copies of the expansion just to secure another boost, as that would be "tremendously awkward" to tell fans. $60 'is fair'.
