BioWare "implementing additional security" for Star Wars: The Old Republic

An EA/BioWare email has been sent out to all Star Wars: The Old Republic users warning that a password reset will be forced soon so that new passphrases meet "best practices" of strength.

As accounts with EA are linked together through Origin it means the new 'stronger' password will be for everything. These "new security standards" will ensure account safety.

Minecraft sales exceed 4M units

Less than two weeks before the MineCon convention, Mojang's popular sandbox creation MMO Minecraft has hit 4M paid users since creator Markus 'Notch' Persson started selling the game while in pre-release in 2009.

This was revealed by the websites statistics page, which saw over nine thousand sales in 24 hours put the game over the 4M mark. The official site has 16M total registered users.

LEGO Universe to be shuttered January 2012

LEGO Universe, we hardly knew ye.

The kid-oriented LEGO-based MMO will be officially shuttered on the 31st January 2012, while the LEGO Universe staff was informed that the 'Play Well Studios' in Louisville, Colorado and the game's marketing function in Billund, Denmark will be closed. This will result in 115 employees being let go, though they will be offered assistance in finding new jobs inside or outside the LEGO Group.

THQ's Brian Farrell states that the upcoming Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium Online will utilise a "flexible" monetisation model so they can "exploit the game on a worldwide basis."

The Vigil developed MMO won't have "just one business model," but will employ "other monetisation mechanisms" and the team has been "very thoughtful about how" to do it.

Sony Online Entertainment has announced that DC Universe Online is now officially free-to-play. Starting today, all players can create their own superhero (or supervillain) and join the legendary DC Comics characters in a fight of good versus evil.

NCsoft has announced that one of the largest MMOs in the world, Lineage II, will be going free-to-play. The conversion will be timed with the release of its upcoming update, Goddess of Destruction. The update is the largest in the MMO's history, which NCsoft claims features more than 400 hours of new content.

EVE Online developer CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson admits at first the backlash from their community was "disregarded" as just a vocal minority; as "some noise in the channel".

However the space loving studio learnt that it was "something that was really emotionally important," and reminded them how "really connected" people in EVE Online are.

EA Games label boss Frank Gibeau says they're "very confident" of getting a "solid launch." The publisher admits that "so much is hanging on the first week" of the Star Wars MMO.
