BioWare date Mass Effect 2 for late January, spill on pre-order loot

Commander Shepard's return has been confirmed as January 29th in the UK and Europe, with developer BioWare also unveiling what pre-order goodies come with Mass Effect 2.

Terminus Gear and Inferno Armour each have their perks and will be available from retailers yet to be named, as DLC. Mass Effect 2 is BioWare's 'Empire Strikes Back' chapter.

No dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2, mod support unknown

Developer Infinity Ward was doing everything right to whip up gamers for the return to Modern Warfare, except for the bit about no dedicated servers, the lifeblood of PC gamers.

In order to play online you'll need to connect with IWNet, Infinity's own match hosting system. You'll be "completely reliant" on it but what of mod map support? Don't have answers.

Alpha Protocol is officially delayed, Sega push RPG to "Spring 2010"

Obsidian Entertainment's action-RPG Alpha Protocol was scheduled to be imminently with us, but then retailers went and started slapping a 2010 date on it. Sega finally speaks.

The publisher confirms the game no longer has a home in '09, and it'll instead be releasing in spring 2010. Obsidian "very happy" it has been delayed to give it the "best chance" next year.

Gearbox announce Borderlands first DLC, it's got zombie trouble

Next week for Xbox 360 and PS3, Gearbox's colourful Borderlands will launch and then it arrives for PC gamers the week after that. The first DLC piece has just been tattled on.

It'll involve a whole region swarming with zombies, where the player will have to help out a Dr. Zed. Quests are about trying to "cure the inhabitants" of this unfortunate turn of events.

Left 4 Dead 2 demo out October 27th for pre-orders, details spilled

Valve has revealed some details about the upcoming demo for Left 4 Dead 2, and that pre-order customers can get it a week before the great unwashed masses via Steam.

The demo resides in 'The Parish' campaign, where 1-4 players can get a taste on Xbox 360 and PC. It includes the new boss infected and melee weaponry. It's public on November 3rd.

Free DDO 'hits and exceeds' Turbine's projections, subs up by 40%

The free-to-play relaunch of Dungeons and Dragons Online by developer Turbine in the US is proving quite the boon for the community. No sub fees have pushed subs up 40 percent.

There is a "very high percentage" of newcomers that use the in-game store, where the MMO now gets its revenue. A "good chunk" of users are spending more now than they did before.

Crysis developer Crytek have completed their most diabolical creation to date, and it's not even a game. Their CryEngine 3 has a new demonstration video, and it's... just, heaven.

Crytek say it's the "best development solution" for both "today and tomorrow." The only one out there that enables "real-time development." It's all suited up as 'next gen ready'; looks it!

Many MMOs face trouble during their development, but not many have had the streak of bad luck that developer Cheyenne Mountain and Stargate Worlds has had. Future still murky.

The website for Stargate Worlds has been down since the 9th, but it's live again now. There's still "desire, enthusiasm and excitement" to launch the game but funding is insufficient.

Tolkien MMO The Lord of the Rings Online gets its latest digital expansion soon. Siege of Mirkwood raises the level cap, adds a new zone and a whole new Skirmish system.

The standard edition comes with a speed-enhancing cloak if pre-ordered, but the special edition includes the Adventurer's Pack. That adds character slots, shared storage and gear.

The first downloadable content for Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is due in "a matter of weeks," and the developers are trying out all sorts for the future. Perfect for expansion.

Codemasters' Sion Lenton confirms there will be "weapons packs, map packs" coming for sure, as a release is now "just the beginning" thanks to DLC. They're "already prototyping" more.

Left 2 Dead 2 Boycott mission ends "accomplished", now disbands

The L4D2 Boycott group, whose manifesto was to get "Valve's attention" back to the original Left 4 Dead and not simply "steer people away" from the sequel, have fulfilled their goals.

Valve flew out two members of the group to discuss the Boycott issues a while back. They've "succeeded" in their mission; "nothing more or less." As of October 21st it's disbanded.

Runic "big fans" of Steam, Torchlight now available on it "day one"

Developer Runic planned a 30 day exclusivity period where the action-RPG and Diablo-like Torchlight would only sell on the official site, before migrating to platforms like Steam.

Things have changed. Runic say it's important it becomes as "widely available as possible" and so will be "starting day one" on Steam. This first game from Runic is on sale October 27th.

Blizz reveals Battle.net deadline, free in-game penguin for mergers

The new and improved Battle.net is still under development at Blizzard, but they've now issued a deadline for North American and European users to merge accounts.

World of Warcraft subscribers must merge their accounts with a new Battle.net one, by November 11th in the US and the 12th in Europe. As a thanks, Blizz reward with WoW penguins.

Developer 2D Boy of the physics-based puzzler World of Goo is celebrating one full year of the indie game's release, and runs a special 'sale time' promotion until October 19th.

This offer means you can pay "whatever" you want for the game, from a single cent to "a million dollars," and says it's even a chance for pirates "at redemption!" World of Goo on iPhone.

Cascade Game Foundry is a Washington-based developer, and they'll be reconsidering all their "preconceived notions," says Cascade's Rick Selby. Hardcore sim fans "critical foundation".

Developer Relic Entertainment have unleashed their latest free content update for Dawn of War II, and this one adds arena style action as squads must survive enemy waves.

The new mode adds leaderboards and new wargear to help you try and make it through. This update also adds an ocean of balance tweaks to multiplayer and bug fixes. Get it!

Ubisoft ponders WWII for Assassin's Creed 3, focus beyond a trilogy

Producer Sebastien Puel at Ubisoft has revealed they've "had discussions" about a World War 2 setting for a third Assassin's Creed, and one where you could play a female.

Gender isn't the focus, as the time period is always the "first inspiration" for the games. Originally thought of as a trilogy, Ubi say they can just "expand and expand," no limits in place.

Bioware: "We would love to revisit Jade Empire"

In an interview with Strategy Informer, Lead Designer of Dragon Age: Origins, Mike Laidlaw, said that Jade Empires is a favourite among the staff of Bioware and that the firm would love to revisit it.

"We will certainly announce it if it’s going to be coming out. At this point, Jade Empire is a staff favourite and a lot of us love it, so we’d love to revisit it at some point. But right now, we are very focused on Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2."
said Laidlaw.

High street retailer GAME has the exclusive for BioWare's Dragon Age: Origins, as they're the only ones to be peddling us the Collector's Edition next month, here in the UK.

Everyone else can go suck regular lemons. The CE contains a 'Making of' DVD with the game, which comes in a "Plastic Collectors Box". Also the soundtrack, wallpaper, tips and more.

Milestone call DiRT 2 "fantastic", want to match and beat the game

Publisher Black Bean, along with developer Milestone, will be taking on DiRT from Codemasters as they've just inked a three-year deal for World Rally Championship.

They plan on turning it into an annual franchise with the first due in spring on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Milestone has "a lot of respect" for their rivals, will try to "match and possibly beat" them.
