Triumph Studios' Lennart Sas assures us that the newly announced Age of Wonders III "absolutely stays true to its turn-based roots," fantasy setting, empire building and role playing elements.
They have gotten "a lot of the original team together" to recapture the 'more magical atmosphere' of the first game. Their "biggest change" is more focus on leader characters.

Although we originally thought Epic Games would be publishing Age of Wonders 3 for Triumph Studios, it actually turns out that the game doesn't have a publisher at all and Minecraft creator Notch, real name Markus Persson, is funding it.
Distribution and co-publishing deals haven't been ruled out, but because Notch is such a big fan of the franchise and doesn't have much time to work on publishing it, he's agreed to help fund it anyway.

Triumph Studios, the development team behind the Overlord and Age of Wonders series, announced today that it's developing Age of Wonders 3 for the PC.
Age of Wonders III sees a modern reimagining of the series, where players join a clash of kings, queens and dark lords for the spoils of an ancient paradise.
