American Civil War - The Blue and the Gray, review by herodotus

Hardcore Strategy for Strategy Gamers.Ageod's "American Civil War" is a Turn-Based strategy title recounting the war between the North American States between 1861 and 1865. It includes a Grand Campaign, several shorter campaigns and a few Battle Scenarios like Shiloh and Second Mannassis (or Bull Run if you're a Northener). Like Empire's "The Civil War" (the follow-up title to Microprose's "Fields of Glory") the game is played from a strategic map viewpoint. Unlike Empire's game however, there is no option to resolve battle in real-time graphical 'spleandour'. It is Auto-resolved in a semi-realtime way using a meter, then displaying the results. This game is not for the Casual gamer in any way and if graphics are the end-all-be-all for you, then run for a mile. This is Gameplay...period. There are two Tutorials included, but using the printed tutorial while learning to play really is the only way. A good working knowledge of the War itself is actually essential in gaining the most from this title, as the units and commanders are historically accurate and the AI is programmed to follow historical orders. To challenge the AI means having some idea what is going to happen and when, the surprise being how it will react to your changes in History.
If you enjoy the period, love Strategy games then this title may just take up a good part of your leisure time (and sleep). The MP aspect is the old PBEM (play by e-mail) from the '90's but is still fun. All in all, this is a great package and fine addition to any Strategist's collection. Posted on 06/23/2008 19:57
