Frontier announce launch price for Elite: Dangerous, unveils 'Mercenary Edition'

For anyone not jumping in early to Frontier Developments' Elite: Dangerous then you'll probably want to know how much it'll cost when it finally releases? Well now the answer is available.

Frontier's online store will sell Elite: Dangerous for £39.99 ($59.99 / €49.99), however there is a special pre-order digital pack for £5 cheaper; the 'Mercenary Edition'.

Frontier Developments is flush with space cash today thanks to Elite: Dangerous causing a dangerous amount of keyboards to short-circuit from saliva overload.

However the original budget for the space sim was £8 million, which was Frontiers own pocket money, but then an extra £1.58m came from Kickstarter backers. There's enough to finish it.

The Elite Dangerous beta has been reduced in price - it's now £50, which is down from the intimidatingly expensive original price of £200. Still a ludicrous price for a beta, but at least it's no longer obscene.

The first regular beta phase, known as Beta 1, has now begun, replacing the 'Premium Beta' that those who splashed out cash to play the game first will have experienced.

David Braben's Elite: Dangerous is now entering the beta phase for those of premium standing, meaning no dirty masses are welcome in yet. Its immediate focus are the "systems and servers" of the game.

Feedback will see re-balancing as time goes on. A lifetime expansion is part of the Premium Beta, and upgrades are still available from the standard pre-order for Elite.

Final alpha phase launches for Elite: Dangerous, explore five star systems

Frontier has just updated Elite: Dangerous with Alpha 4, which marks the final phase in the alpha with the space game officially moving into beta by the end of May. Five star systems can be explored in Alpha 4.

Elite now opens up with "total freedom" to trade, pirate and bounty hunt across the stars. Five ships are now pilotable. Alpha purchases are now closed for Elite: Dangerous.
