This mod by waronmars replaces the default battle radar icons, or 'pips' with more readable ones. Squares for infantry, 'T' for artillery, and an option of triangles or circles for cavalry.

Like the idea, but I rarely use the mini-map in a battle as with all the bugs units tend to warp all over the map or vanish then re-appear at will.
