Fallout 3 Review (PC)

Get ready to break free from Vault 101 and explore the post-apocalyptic world of Capital Wasteland.

Bethesda is ready to reintroduce the gaming world to Fallout and boy is it an amazing experience. While the world isn’t as colorful as say Katamari Damacy, it’s at least an equally beautiful game with its rundown and hazardous environments. So let’s dig deep into one of the most satisfying games of 2008.

V.A.T.S. battle system is always fulfilling...
... and gives pleasurable gore moments

Fallout 3 begins with having gamers create their character while they run through an expedited childhood in Vault 101. It’s in this vault that you’ll find the comfort of a brotherhood looking out for one another but little do you know the secrets that lie outside the vault. The Overseer of the vault doesn’t permit anyone to leave or enter the vault, so when your father makes a break for it, it surprises everyone and you also must escape or face being killed by the Overseer due to your father’s choice to leave. Once you leave Vault 101, you’ll be thrown into an unfamiliar world that is full of raiders and super-mutants ready to tear you to shreds.

The world that Bethesda presents is one full of turmoil that begs for players to be evil and selfish. To survive, you’ll have to look out for yourself and worry about no one else’s safety because the moment you do, you’ll be exposed and vulnerable to betrayal.  There’ll be quests where you have to decide the fate of an NPC, so be prepared to pick between life or death.  The majority of the time, if you let an NPC live, you’ll be able to pick up a quest or two from them and benefit from the rewards they have for sparing their life. Even with your saint-like methods, don’t expect anyone to be so kind to your emergence from Vault 101.

When you begin exploring Capital Wasteland, you’ll soon begin to realize how massive the world of Fallout 3 is.  Survival will be tough, but with the aid of your handy Vault-Tech Assisted Targeting System (VATS), you should be able to stay alive. VATS allows players to pick which enemy they would like to target, which body part they would like to hit, and how many times they'd like to shoot depending on their action points (AP).  You can target the head, chest, legs, arms and the weapon of an enemy when you activate the VATS. Once you start using VATS, you’ll never want to go back to fighting in real-time because once you see an enemy’s head decapitated after a shotgun blast to the head, you will be hooked.

The combat is downright enjoyable to the bitter end.  The first-person perspective is the way to go for the entirety of Fallout 3 due to the lack of time put into developing an enjoyable third-person perspective. The walking animations and action isn’t that interesting when you switch over to the third-person perspective. But back to the first-person perspective; it allows players to see the action up close and see all the dirty details of the world they are exploring. Even fighting a mole rat or rabid dog is interesting in the first-person perspective since you’ll see how ticked off they are to live in such a cruel environment.

Welcome to the wasteland
In reality, you're not too warmly welcomed

Speaking about the environments, they are fully detailed and impressive. They are the best attribute of the graphical portion of Fallout 3 while the character models are somewhat above average. The diversity of environments to explore and the items scattered throughout them help create a unique world to explore. The load times are on the average side in terms of length and don’t do much to better the experience.  Also, the framerate does drop from time to time but nothing substantial.

For the role-playing aspects, players will be able to level up through the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck) system.  On top of that, they will be able to pick skills they can specialize in such as melee weapons, energy weapons, medical care, and much more. If that isn’t enough, there are perks to add bonuses to your character such as better damage with small weapons and the ability to persuade children to give you information. There’s a lot here to tinker with, so be prepared for a lot of chances to create your own unique character.

If you’re a fan of having people joining you on your quests, Fallout 3 permits NPCs to join you as an ally and embark on missions. You can pick up an ally depending on where you stand with your karma, so not everyone will aid you on your quests.  Don’t expect an ex-raider to join with you if you’re a good-doer – it just doesn’t work like that.  Also, you will be able to get a canine friend to join you on your journey through Capital Wasteland.

Another big aspect that will please role-playing fanatics is that Fallout 3 doesn’t include enemies that level up with your character. In different areas of Capital Wasteland you’ll encounter harder enemies to take down, especially super-mutants.  So don’t expect to waltz right into the subway tunnels and be able to tear through hordes of ghouls if you aren’t a high enough level.  Concentrate on leveling up your character before you go adventuring into unknown territories.

Dematerialization in progress
Some mercenaries wont join if your karma is too high

Perhaps the best features of Fallout 3 are the monstrous weapons.  From the Rock-It Launcher to a switchblade, there are literally dozens of weapons to use within Fallout 3.  Beware though, if you use a weapon too much, its condition will worsen and its effectiveness will wear down. You can fix your weapons and build new ones if you find the blueprints and parts to make them. There’s a wide array of weapons to pick and choose from, so you won’t become bored too fast with the weapon gameplay of Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 is a stand-out RPG that offers a heaping amount of replay value and entertainment. The NPCs that fill the world are natural jerks and it makes the experience all the more entertaining as they are humorous and nihilistic. The voice-acting helps take the game to new lengths and the VATS defines how players will think about Fallout 3 long after they complete the title. Fallout 3 is an outrageous game that’s a joyful ride until the closing minutes of the game.

Top Game Moment: Loading up your Rock-It Launcher with a mini-nuke and blowing a super-mutant to smithereens.

Overall I'm really enjoying this game, it's one of those ones that you promise yourself you'll only play 15 more minutes and the next thing you know it's four in the morning. They've tried really hard to keep true to the Fallout lore and it shows. Those who are expecting a nostalgic trip like fallout 1 or 2( two of my fav games ever) may be disappointed, but it's a fallout for a new generation with a number of great throwbacks.

Why disappointed Knave? The game is great. Didn't enjoyed a game that much in a while. It's Fallout in 3D > FPS. I'd give it 9 for the score. A bit of A.I. glitches but nothing too drastic. Love Vats gore!

Fallout in 3D > FPS I would give it an 8.3 as my score because they need to fix the A.I. glitches on the game.

As I expected that they'll totally screw the classic, I'm positively suprised to find the game quite good, especially after Mass Effect. There are even some nice references to 1 & 2. What I don't like is that the game is too easy, even playing on max diff. The world has no sense of danger, especialy after STALKERs & Dead Space, and combat damage is low. With 3 pts in STR, END & 11 pts Unarmed (and not a point more spent) I aced first 5 character levels with just melee weapons (knuckles mostly) even against shooting enemies...

Oh, and btw. I've heard that there is a very nice bug in the BETA version - You need to shoot somebody in the head more than 10 times to kill him. I saw that with my own eyes on GT. Amazing, I tell ya! But not cool!

It's not a bug, it's damage system -> weapons deal damage substracted from HP. And yeah, it works quite weird at least, but it was the same in 1 & 2.

Personally I'm not disappointed, I rated it nine. But I just wanted to stress that it does have a different fell than the first two.

If you compare the mechanics between the two, you'll end up being disappointed (mainly the old hardcore fallout fans). Though I do miss the random encounters and monty python references.

And as a final point, i love the addition of Malcom McDowell as the president.

Hmm, where to begin?
Well first things first, yes this is Oblivion with guns, or rather it is a mod for Oblivion, one that makes many rights but doesn't make it into Fallout 3.

Secondly, yes there is SecuROM, but no, no activation but yes still problems. Several people have had problems installing and playing their games due to the SecuROM demanding alcohol and other disc image reading softwares (among those sometimes your all time favorite NERO) as pirate programs! I experienced some problems installing the game, the disc took a heck of a long time to read and sometimes the disc failed to be found at all. Same thing with playing, but some surfing to none so official places took care of that problem - at that actually makes me infuriated. I have the tin box, the bobble head guy since Beth promised to have such a lenient as possible CP check and still, problems!

The game, is addictive, like Oblivion, yes even though it has faults this is a good game. It is a post nuclear action RPG best combated through via FPS style and traveled in 3rd person view. The 3rd person view that many (included me) is the preferred way is underdeveloped but OK. It is nothing new. The game looks beautiful and on my former top end computer (3.14 Ghz Pentium, 8800 GTS 512 MB, 4 G ram on my 22" flat screen, I experience something really nice. The S.P.E.C.I.A.L system makes this feel a lot less consolly then the Oblivion did thus, it is a good game here too. Sometimes I get a feeling that I am traveling between Oblivion and Hellgate London. The textures especially in an abandon train station felt like this clearly.
The system makes combat the king. You can fight against everything it seems, except repair. Repair is very vital since things deteriorate VERY quickly with use. A bit too much.
Some people say that you can\t get the feel of the big waste and things are very close around the corner. Yes and no, it is big city. So yes, we can expect things living close by. Also, your character moves around like stuck in syrup and can\t carry all the nice loot. So you need to kill your darlings. Toss the mini gun out!

All in all, it is a good game, but I can't say it feels like Fallout 3.

Oh I just managed to finish it. NooooOO :( But yeah lasted long enough. I guess I wasn't supposed to play it as much as I did. Great game and it is Fallout 3 in my opinion. Others are free to not like the game for any reasons, but I enjoyed every moment of it.

Okay, I've just returned from my bunker (appartment) and turned the lights on. I've been playing this game like crazy for some 20 hours, sitting one meter infront of my 40 inch screen. And it was alot of fun, I tell you that! There was humor, there was horror (atleast I found it scary when sneaking around ghouls in a dark train station), and there was blood and gore!

The bad side is, it's too much oblivion. Sure you roam around freely and that's nice and all, but it does get repetitive. The side-quests are few and the NPC interactions lack alot. There's too few options, too little possibilites. It really is a shooter with a bit of story and a bad-ass atmosphere. But I wanted more roleplay from Fallout 3. Right now, all you got is Good, Bad or Neutral options. You rarely get use for skills like medicine, repair, sience in quests and conversations. And yes I know there's computer terminals and weapons need repairs, but that's only a one way street, it's too shallow.

To sum it up, it's a great game, I really enjoyed it, but now it's sort of over. The main quest was the fun in the game, but was too short. It's an 8 for me, had it had more roleplaying focus - a definite 10.

I found the game to be really great even if it was rather easy. And when i mean easy i mean easy with max difficultly i still kill anything with a matter of 1-3 head shots. But with all its easiness i was still a great play I've just started another character for a second run through. so i give this game a 9 if it wasn't so easy i would have givin it a 10.

Anybody playing as an evil character? I'm about to cut out nice guy routine and replay with evil flavor to it.

Sounds a bit too much like Bioshock and STALKER. Am yet to be convinced, past waiting for the inevitable January price drop. Soz guys, I know you love it, but Oblivion still stands firm.

And just to eat my words...I've gone and ordered it and should be arriving any day now. So much for my conviction in not buying any more games. Bah...what an addict!

LOL Hero, well I hope you won't be disapointed, I'm still liking Fallout 3, though I'm also still claiming it not to be the "true" follower to Fallout and Fallout 2 ;)

I've seen the work that was done on Fallout3 by Infogrames before it was canned, and it looked interesting. Old, but interesting. I don't see this as Oblivion with guns, and if you look closely at all the artwork it is very faithful to the original source material. Sure there are similarities, but I just think there are a lot of folk who secretly love it but openly bash it because that's the cool thing to do. Bah humbug.

Fallout 3 is good I meen really good. I know people have different opinions on this but I think it smashes Oblivion completely. I really like RPG's and this is one of the best I've come across not the best but it would easily make my top 5. Well Done Bethesda

I was a bit disappointed with Fallout 3 to be honest. Several pros and cons, I'd settle for a 8,5:
+ Great atmosphere! It sucks you in, the first few hours, and you'll be completely overwhelmed with the intense setting.
+ Nice graphics to complement the immersion.
+ Variable, interesting characters, towns, sections.
- Very weak main stoyline.
- You'll be fighting the same enemies all the time, and as the VATS is needed to use all the time, it repeatedly interrupts the action. Exploring can be a chore, as there are no vehicles, and you'll know exactly, what king of monsters you'll find.
Subjective conclusion: fantastic game, if you're interested in the post-apocalyptic environment, should definitely give it a try, but I'll stick with Oblivion.

9 out of 10, Bethesda is a living legend! Oblivion (Elder Scroll) rulez, and now the Fallout 3... can't forget the damage when you shoot bandits right on their head!!!

All i can say is that this game is S.P.E.C.I.A.L.
Don't you think? Brotherhood of steel throughout these years still look kickass!
This is a must buy for everyone out there who loves a good old fashioned RPG with a lot to keep us busy.

Yeah, this game is an RPG with gunslinging action. Unlike any other FPS games, we need to shape our character first to finish the game. Love it!

Yeah, I liked the character-shaping too. More balanced and more measurable than in Oblivion. However, sometimes too FPS for me, and as Herodotus said, I have constantly been looking for anomalies, etc, this is the game that STALKER should've been.

This game should be very good, sorry you still do not have translation for Portuguese!

I from Brazil, and how the game is all set for dialogue has not how to play without understanding what the characters say!

I anxiously to see how it is.

Good point, Nicolas19! About the FPS gameplay, i think it's not that bad! The game focuses on that gameplay, so i think that's fine....

You'll still have to wait a long time richard, because people sometimes don't care about language packs. I don't need any because i fully understand english, but i know how some people face that language barrier and cannot play some of their favourite games.

A great game. Yes there are quite a few glitches & it has its share of flaws but overall Fallout 3 was a really good game. It easily would make my top 5 for this year.

Only drawback I've really found so far, is the grim colour pallette (or lack of) can start to wear me down (like an overcast day). Can only play in short doses, then have to go immerse myself in something brighter, more colourful and joyful...like CoD 4 & 5.
