Dishonored writer finds Valve's handling of Gordon Freeman "really creepy"
Austin Grossman is a writer for Arkane's Dishonored which releases this week. He drew inspiration from Valve's equally mute protagonist Gordon Freeman in what not to do with a silent lead.
He 'hates' what Valve do with Freeman, finding it "incredibly awkward and really creepy." Valve treat him as an empty vessel as people talk "at him, about him and sometimes even for him."

Viktor Antonov played a crucial role in Valve's Half-Life 2 as it was he that concepted a lot of City 17 and the Combine architecture. Why did the art director leave Valve of all places?
Actually his explanation is quite a simple one. Valve "stopped making epic, triple-As," and turned to episodes. That just wasn't enough to satisfy Antonov, who has worked at Arkane on Dishonored.

Valve's business development director Jason Holtman explains how Gabe Newell, his boss, isn't his boss. Yeah, those crazy Valve guys and gals really do work without a dictator.
It's like they share ideas equally or something - oh wait, they do. Holtman says the bossless atmosphere "tends to work" when you resist looking for 'the leader'. "It's totally worth it."

Newell: Innovation must continue with hardware, 'sell it ourselves if we must'

Valve boss Gabe Newell pins hopes on constant innovation, and so if it starts to struggle then they'd consider releasing hardware themselves, despite probably being rubbish at it.
It would be a last resort but a necessary one to "get these kind of projects started" - it's "definitely not the first thought" they have at Valve, but they'd take on the challenge if need be.
