Free-to-play games aren't some fad, they're getting bigger and now starting to nip at the heels. Xfire has stated, in a recent report, that F2P with micro-transactions are becoming mainstream among gamers.

Xfire runs a free chat and server browser client and has seen their World of Warcraft numbers tumble, while League of Legends rockets upward. The "rapid ascension" of F2P took them by surprise.

Lord of the Rings Online begins Summer Festival, ends July 11th

It's officially summer for Lord of the Rings Online as its Summer Festival started yesterday with "time-honored racing and fishing", and will end next month.

Yes the whole of Middle-earth is caught up in competition "with reins or rod" as users undertake challenges for rewards. Of course you could just gamble?

Rumour: Turbine making "unannounced online console project"

A job post for a software engineer via Turbine's parent company Warner Brothers reveals they've got an "unannounced online console" videogame in the works.

It seems to be called 'Project Hendrix' according an online CV, which reveals it's for PC and includes PvP features. They've already canned one console MMO.

Codemasters Online relinquishes control of Europe's Lord of the Rings Online servers to game developer Turbine this June 1st, announces the studio.

There will be "limited service interruption" during the server changeover which sees NA and EU groups combine to become the LOTRO Global Service.

Turbine is one super happy camper since they switched Lord of the Rings Online from subscription over to free-to-play as user accounts have exploded.

Over 1 million new players signed up, 20% of former players came back, a 300% rise in concurrent users and 400% in active. MMO that, cynicism!
