Sony Online plans to turn original PlanetSide free-to-play
A blast from the past as John Smedley from Sony Online Entertainment reveals they've got things in motion to turn 2003's PlanetSide into a free-to-play MMO after all these years.
Right now players of PlanetSide 2 will be getting 6 months of free playtime for the original PlanetSide through a promotion, but eventually it will be adopting the F2P model entirely much like its successor.

Continent-wide conquest never looked so good and Sony Online is chuffed with their 'ForgeLight' that powers free-to-play MMO PlanetSide 2. It's so good that they'll use it for all MMOs going forward.
It's robust enough to stay looking pretty while there's 2,000 on a server with 200 on the screen, which you "just can't do" with other MMOs and achieve 60 FPS. The engine can scale easily.

Sony Online Entertainment's John Smedley assures fans through Reddit that the PlanetSide 2 team hate cheaters "just as much as you do", and they're working tirelessly to find and boot them out.
They can't act hastily though and "falsely accuse" users who've just got good game. Smedley says they've got "very good hacking detection" but no system is perfect to catch all "aimbotting scumbags."
