I. INSTALLATION & SET UP ISSUES

The QUAKE 4 Demo presents the introduction portion of the Single Player
game, where you, as Matthew Kane, battle with Rhino Squad to clear a
landing zone for the main earth forces. Also included in this demo is the
same fast-paced multiplayer action of the full version, which includes two
of our most popular maps - "The Fragging Yard" and "The Fragging Yard 1v1".

Please note that QUAKE 4 requires your video and audio drivers to be up to
date. Please contact your hardware manufacturer to find the latest drivers
for your system.

NOTE: Activision(r), Raven Software(r) and id Software(r) do not offer customer
support for this demo.

2. Multiplayer setup

Overview

Please note: The QUAKE 4 Demo is only able to connect to servers
created by the QUAKE 4 Demo.

To play Multiplayer, connect to a game server running QUAKE 4. Anyone
can create a server, so there are always many available on the Internet.
Servers are the computers hosting the game. Some games may be hosted on
machines that are being used to play the game (on that same computer),
while others may be "dedicated" servers that are hosting the game just
for other people to play.

Connecting to Your ISP

QUAKE 4 REQUIRES A BROADBAND INTERNET CONNECTION (E.G., DSL, CABLE MODEM,
T1, ETC.). If you connect to the Internet using a dial-up modem, QUAKE 4
Multiplayer will not function properly.

QUAKE 4 Multiplayer is bandwidth intensive. This means a slower upload
speed will be able to support fewer combatants. Be sure to set upstream
and downstream settings (in Advanced Server Options) appropriate to your
connection speed to ensure the optimal number of players. Recommended
maximum players for broadband upload speeds under OPTIMAL conditions are
provided below:

128Kbps - 4 players 512Kbps - 10 players
256Kbps - 6 players 768Kbps - 12 players
384Kbps - 10 players LAN - 16 players

For Internet play, connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
before starting Multiplayer. Most broadband users have a persistent
Internet connection, so you won't need to do anything special. See your
Windows and ISP documentation for information on how to connect to your
ISP.

Multiplayer Settings

Once you're online, start QUAKE 4, select Multiplayer from the Main Menu
and select Settings to enter your name, set your data rate, and select your player model.

Joining a Game

To join a game, first select Multiplayer from the Main Menu, then Game
Browser to access the game browser. The game browser offers a number of
options to help you locate a game. Click on the boxes in the top-right
to switch between local games (LAN) and Internet games.

The Game Browser list provides information about each server. Sort the
list of servers by selecting the tab above each column in the list.
You may have up to three sorting options at once. (Undo all the sorting
options by pressing Clear Sorting.) You'll generally experience better
performance on a server with a lower ping time. Press Refresh List to
update your browser with the latest servers and information.

To connect to a server, double-click on its name or click once to
highlight it, and click on Join Server. When you mouse over a server,
important information about the server will be displayed in a tooltip.

Some servers may require a password to connect. If a server requires a
password, you'll be prompted to enter one after joining the server.

Servers that are grayed out in the game browser have a maxplayer limit
higher than recommended for your CPU speed.

Connect to a Specific Server

If you know the IP address of a specific server, you can enter it by
clicking Join IP Address at the Game Browser.

Find Player/Clan

You can search all active Internet servers for people, both by their
handle and their clan.

Add to Favorites/Remove Favorite

You can mark a server as a "Favorite" by selecting it in the browser,
then clicking Add to Favorites. When you sort by Favorites, the servers
you've marked show up first in the list. To remove a server as a
favorite, select it and click Remove Favorite.

Creating a Server

If you want to use your computer as a game server, click on Multiplayer
and then click Create Server. From this screen, you can select the map
you want the server to run as well as several other options. Once you've
set the options you want, click the Create Server button. Please note
that hosting a server requires an Internet connection with high upstream.

The options are as follows:

Map Selection

This is the list of maps you're able to host. Please note that the only
maps available in the QUAKE 4 Demo are "The Fragging Yard" and "The
Fragging Yard 1v1".

Server Name

This name will be displayed in the Game Browser list to other players.

Server Type

Select LAN to have the server visible only to your local network. Select
Internet to make your server visible to the Internet. Please note that
firewalls may interfere with setting up and running an Internet server.

Dedicated

No - Start a local server and a local client.

Yes - Start a server that others can connect to, but cannot be played on
locally. This is recommended for hosting on the Internet.

Gametype

This sets what kind of game mode you will host.

DM - Deathmatch mode
Free-for-all gametype where the competitor with the most frags wins the
match.

Team DM - Team Deathmatch mode
Free-for-all, but with teams! Strogg and Marine teams compete to
attain the most frags for their respective sides. Be careful who you
target in this gametype; even with team damage off, armor is not
resistant to friendly fire.

Tourney - Tournament mode
Tourney Mode is a game mode where players fight one versus one in a
classic, bracketed tournament system. Once the random seeding, or
bracket placement, process is finished, players will fight in multiple
arenas simultaneously. The number of arenas are dependent on the
number of competitors present. Competitors that join a Tourney server
after a Tournament round has begun will need to wait for the round to
complete before getting seeded - you must be seeded before you can
compete. If there are an odd number of competitors, one player will
receive a "BYE" - pretty much a free pass to advance to the next
bracket. The BYE player will then automatically be paired with a
winner in the next bracket.

NOTE: The full version of the game also includes CTF and Arena CTF
Multiplayer gametypes.

Frag Limit/Capture Limit

In DeathMatch or Team DM, this is the number of kills (frags) a player
must obtain to win the match. In Tourney, it's the number of kills
required to win the round. If two players have the same number of
kills when time runs out (based on the time limit), the game or round
will enter Sudden Death mode, where the next player to get a kill wins
the match or the round.

Time Limit

Set in minutes so the player with the highest score after the time
limit expires wins. Once the time limit is hit, the map will reload
with all players starting at zero frags. If the game is tied when the
time limit is reached, the game will go into Sudden Death mode. In
Tourney mode, this is the time limit for the individual round.

Max Players

Set the maximum number of players allowed on your server at any time.
The highest this can be set to is 16.

Do Warmup

Allow time for players to join and get ready before the match starts.

Allow Spectators

Allow people to join your server to watch the game without playing.

Team Damage

Available for team gametypes, this option enables or disables friendly
fire between teammates.

Advanced Options

The Advanced Options let you change settings such as server passwords and
server-side mods.


TROUBLESHOOTING:

1. Video Issues
Please note that the QUAKE 4 Demo can automatically configure optimal video
settings based on your computer's hardware. In the Main Menu: click
SETTINGS, then SYSTEM, then click the AUTO DETECT SETTINGS button, then
click YES. Any change in Screen Size (and some advanced options) requires
you to quit and restart QUAKE 4 for them to take effect.

In addition to setting Low Quality, disabling High Quality Special Effects,
Specular, Bump Maps, and Shadows will help improve performance. These can
be disabled under the ADVANCED SETTINGS of the SYSTEM menu. Please note
that while increasing performance, disabling these options turns off
graphical features that are key in the QUAKE 4 experience.


2. Sound Issues

A. The game tells me I don't have surround sound speakers when I do.

If you have surround sound speakers make sure that you have the correct
speaker configuration in the Windows(r) control panel and not only in
any software utilities that came with your sound card.
For Windows(r) XP:
Select "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the control panel. On the
"Volume" tab, click the "Advanced" button under Speaker Settings. Make
sure you have the correct speaker configuration chosen in the drop-down
menu on the "Speakers" tab.

For Windows(r) 2000:
Select "Sounds and Multimedia" in the control panel. Click the "Audio"
tab. Click the "Advanced" button under "Sound Playback". Make sure the
correct speaker configuration is chosen under "Speaker Setup".

B. The sound stutters while playing:

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card. If
stuttering persists try reducing Hardware Acceleration: Click on Start,
then Run. Type "dxdiag" and hit enter. This brings up the "DirectX(r)
Diagnostic Tool". Click on the Sound tab and try reducing the "Hardware
Sound Acceleration Level" slider.


3. Operating system specific issues

A. Shift Key in Windows(r) 2000/XP Interrupts Game

If you press the Shift key 5 times consecutively in Windows(r) 2000 or
Windows(r) XP the following message should appear:

"By pressing the SHIFT key five times you have turned on the StickyKeys
feature in Windows(r) 2000 [or Windows(r) XP]. With this feature, you
can lock down the CTRL, ALT, or SHIFT keys. This is useful if you are
unable to hold down more than one key at a time.

Click OK to turn this feature on. If you do not want to use the
feature, click Cancel.

To avoid this happening in the future, click the Settings button on the
window referenced above. When the accessibility options screen
appears, click the "Settings" button in the "Sticky Keys" portion of
the window. On the next window (should be labeled "Settings For Sticky
Keys"), uncheck in the box that says, "Use shortcut," then click on
"Apply," and close the windows. The problem should not occur once the
shortcut has been disabled.

B. Windows(r) Key Interrupts Game in 2000/XP

If the Windows(r) key is pressed during game play, the Start Menu will
interrupt the game. Should this happen, simply press the Escape (Esc)
key to close the menu and return to the game. Unfortunately, there is
no way to prevent this from happening again except by being careful not
to hit those keys while playing.

C. Game Icons Are Missing From Start Menu And/Or Desktop In Windows(r)
2000/XP

When installing QUAKE 4 Demo while logged into Windows(r) as a specific
user, the game icons will only show up when logging in as that user.
For example, if you log into Windows(r) as "Joeuser", install the game,
then log out and log back in as "Janeuser", the game icons will not
show up. If you wish to play the game, make sure you log into
Windows(r) as the same user you were logged in as when you installed
the game.

D. Admin Rights Needed To Load and Play On Windows(r) 2000 or XP

If you are running Windows(r) 2000 or Windows(r) XP, you must have
Administrator rights to properly install and play the game.


QUAKE 4 DEMO ADDENDUM:

1. MULTIPLAYER SERVER CONSOLE COMMANDS:

In addition to the server setup provided in the QUAKE 4 shell, it is possible
to set up a server with console commands. (See below for instructions on how
to access the console.) Please note that the use of console commands is not
supported by Activision Customer Support.

si_map:
Sets the multiplayer map. Please note that all the maps are in the mp
directory, so setting a map must be set as "si_map mp/q4dm1.map", for example.

spawnServer:
Spawns a multiplayer server with all the current variables.

gui_configServerRate:
Sets the server's maximum upstream rate, with the following options:
0 - 128 kbits
1 - 256 kbits
2 - 384 kbits
3 - 512 kbits
4 - 768 kbits
5 - LAN speeds
Please set this appropriately to your upstream data rate, or your server performance
will degrade.

si_gameType:
Sets the type of game. Options for the demo are DM, Team DM, or Tourney.

si_name:
Sets the server's name.

si_timeLimit:
Sets the round's time limit in minutes. When set to 0, there is no time limit.

si_fragLimit:
Sets the number of kills a player must get in order to win the round. When set
to 0, there is no frag limit.

si_tourneyLimit:
The number of times a tourney will use the same map before changing the map.

si_minPlayers:
The minimum number of players needed before a match will start, used only when
warmup is enabled.

si_maxPlayers:
The maximum number of players allowed on the server at once.

si_usePass:
Clients must present a password when connecting. Set to 1 to enable, 0 to
disable.

g_password:
Sets the server's password.

si_autobalance:
Keeps both teams the same size in team games. When new players join a TeamDM
match, they will be auto-assigned to the team with the smallest number of
players. Also, if players disconnect from the match, teams will be
re-balanced when the round starts again. Set to 1 to enable, 0 to disable.

si_shuffle:
Shuffles the teams after each round. Only applicable to team games. Set to
1 to enable, 0 to disable.

si_spectators:
Allows spectators when enabled or forces all connected clients to play. Set to
1 to enable, 0 to disable.

si_warmup:
Do a pre-game warmup. Set to 1 to enable, 0 to disable.

si_teamDamage:
Enables "friendly fire," allowing players to damage their teammates. Only
applicable to team games (TeamDM, CTF, ArenaCTF). Set to 1 to enable, 0 to
disable.

si_allowHitScanTint:
Enables custom railgun tinting color for players. Settings are as follows:
0 - no tinting allowed
1 - player hitscan tinting allowed in DM and NO hitscan tinting in team games
2 - player hitscan tinting allowed in DM and use team-color hitscan tints in
team games

si_useReady:
Forces players to select "Ready" before starting a match. Set to 1 to enable, 0
to disable.

si_weaponStay:
With this enabled, players cannot pick up weapons if they already have them, and
cannot get ammo from weapons, only ammo packs. Set to 1 to enable, 0 to
disable.

si_countDown:
This sets the pregame countdown, in seconds.

si_pure:
When this is enabled, the server will not allow any clients to connect if they
have modified data files. Set to 1 to enable, 0 to disable.

serverInfo:
Shows the server info.

serverMapRestart:
Restarts the game currently in progress.

serverNextMap:
Changes to the next map as defined in the mapcycle.scriptcfg file.

WriteServerConfig :
Writes the server's configuration to a file.

g_mapCycle:
Sets the server's map cycling script. Defaults to mapcycle.scriptcfg.

si_mapCycle:
Creates a list of maps to cycle. It requires a semicolon-delimited list,
such as "mp/q4dm1.map;mp/q4dm2.map;mp/q4dm2.map". It takes priority over
the mapcycle.scriptcfg file.

rcon:
Sends a console command or variable (cvar) to the server, when playing as a
client. The syntax is "rcon command/cvar options" (without the quotation
marks). Some options may require a server restart with the spawnServer command.
Please note that the net_clientRemoteConsolePassword must be set to match the
server for this to work.

net_serverRemoteConsolePassword:
Sets the server's Remote Console password.

net_clientRemoteConsolePassword:
Sets the password to use when issuing a command to the server, when playing as a
client.


2. ACCESSING THE CONSOLE:

The Console can be accessed with the CTRL-ALT-TILDE (~) key. Please note that
use of the console is unsupported by Activision Customer Support. Please do not
contact Customer Support with console command questions.

Note: For ease of use, the console can be set to open with just the TILDE (~)
key. To turn this setting on you must enter the following command:
com_allowConsole 1
