Rift, EVE Online and World of Warcraft were three of the major MMOs to stick with a subscription model, and the former will be adopting a free-to-play structure on the 12th June, according to developer Trion Worlds. According to the studio, gamers "will be able to experience the entire game world; every dungeon, every zone, and every level and get full access to all current and future game updates."

MMO Rift will "never" offer its player base the chance at a lifetime subscription, reveals Trion global brand director Jim Butler. He was "against the idea" when he was at MMO studio Turbine.

He pledges it won't happen "on my watch" at Rift's creator Trion. It has long-term repercussions for subscription-only outfits, which means it's a "bad deal for the consumer" too.

The major Rift expansion, Storm Legion, will be arriving on the 13th November. The expansion is so huge it will triple the size of the MMO.
