Funcom closes Beijing office, MMO live teams moved to North Carolina

Funcom's restructuring has started to come into effect as Funcom Beijing is to be closed down. The Chinese-based studio team did a lot of art and animation work for The Secret World.

Meanwhile the live teams for Funcom MMOs are being rehomed at Raleigh, North Carolina. This moves most live devs from Montreal, which will focus more on unannounced mobile projects.

Changing Funcom's The Secret World MMO from a standard subscription to buy-to-play has been a tremendous success, announces the studio. Its December relaunch brought in 70k new players.

That meant a 30% total increase in sales over the past four weeks. Once bought, The Secret World is free-to-play with additional content requiring purchases; subs are still available.

Funcom has announced that The Secret World is now a free-to-play MMO once you've covered the entry fee of buying the game. This means free content access to all of the four major updates.

If you buy and signup before December 31st then the next major update - Issue #5 - will be covered too, otherwise it's $5. Continuing subscribers receive perks over the non-paying flock.

Aside from "massive PvP enhancements" that Funcom have already tooted their horn about with Issue 4 for The Secret World, the studio also highlights some other things to get excited about.

There's the 'Manhattan Exclusion Zone' which is the "very first raid set" in a devastated Times Square, or maybe the Albion Theater in London where players can even "put on their own stage plays" tickles you.
