Activision foots $40-50m bill for Modern Warfare 2's development

According to a report from the LA Times, developer Infinity Ward spent between $40m and $50m on putting their blockbuster sequel together.

In fact that's believed to be less than they were given initially. Rockstar Games reportedly spent $100m on making Grand Theft Auto IV.

Gamers looking forward to Aliens vs. Predator from Rebellion may have been a little fearful last week, as dedicated servers weren't being confirmed.

Don't worry they have been now, its official "that this is the case." Studio boss Jason Kingsley said they always planned to have them.

Professional guy with pen, Jesse Stern, reveals when writing began for Modern Warfare 2 there were some "outlandish things" thrown around.

Things like "outbreaks, viruses, chemical warfare" all got lost to their "stumbling" into real life events, which was "honestly unintentional."

According to code rummaging enthusiasts, Infinity Ward has three 'hidden' multiplayer modes and one involves a nuclear missile silo.

The second is a capture the flag match and the third is VIP, where you protect or kill the important person. Planned as DLC unlocks?

Developer Valve has gone live with a site that features an in-game band from Left 4 Dead 2, which could be a tease for some DLC planned.

It's got "Coming Soon" slapped on it, so hopefully news of more content for the sequel is already prepped. It's out this Friday in the UK.

A Los Angeles Times article claims that publishing giant Activision has enlisted a third studio to work on the huge Call of Duty franchise.

Their report says Activision are "considering adapting" it into an MMO, which is likely given desires to launch new "online monetization models".

There have been rumblings of Trojan code attacks through PC Modern Warfare 2, and that Infinity Ward's matchmaker IWNet is vulnerable.

Well yes it is a possibly, but so is anything with remote connections involved, says Valve's John McCaskey. There's "no evidence" at this time.

The Aussie ratings board, the OFLC, deemed Left 4 Dead 2 as too realistic and having "insufficient delineation" between zombies and humans.

EA argued it should be given an MA15+ rating because of its "unrealistic nature", but that didn't fly very far, so the 'boring' one got through.

Asked if the Canadian developer (don't hold it against them) would consider a first-person shooter, boss Dr. Ray Muzyka declared "we would."

The veteran sees the "definition of RPG" as being "pretty broad" with Mass Effect as prime example. It's "as much a shooter" as an RPG.

Publisher Activision says Russia has no "formal ratings entity" and that the decision to censor out the airport scene was their own doing.

It came at the "advice of local counsel," reveals Activision. Reports of Russia banning the game "are erroneous," only the PC game on sale.

Well just because Activision and Infinity Ward don't want dedicated servers for PC Modern Warfare 2, it doesn't mean it won't happen, sort of.

A very determined soul, 'AgentGOD', has spliced in dedicated server stuff and waved in low gravity, insta-grenade and other match mischief.

This is to be the "longest generation" the industry has seen, gamers "don't have the hardware". Crysis - "very few" could play it.

That it took this long is surprising. Russia has decided they don't want Modern Warfare 2 'as is' because of the airport level controversy.

Although it's entirely an optional level, as is the murder of civilians, Russia want it edited out. Infinity is complying with PC already patched.

According to voice actor Craig Fairbrass, who voiced Ghost in Modern Warfare 2, there may well be a spin-off game in the works from Infinity.

This tease was dropped during the UK launch event for Activision's biggest game ever. Infinity has already said they've no idea what's next.

In an interview with Strategy Informer, Left 4 Dead 2's writer, Chet Faliszek confirmed that Valve aren't done with the Left 4 Dead franchise yet, and that the firm is already talking about what it'll do next.

"I definitely want to live in the world of Left 4 Dead for a while yet. We're not done. I think people will see that we have some bigger things than they first realised and so what that means for gamers, we'll see. We’re at the point now where we're talking about what we're going to be doing next." said Faliskzek.
