Silent Hunter III, review by herodotus
This is onr of the truly great naval simulators (or of any simulatiom games) available. It puts you in command of many different U-Boats in WWII in attempt to either singly or as part of a pack on-line to rack up a large tonnage of merchant and RN/USN ships on the chalkboard. Highly moddable, the community is very strong as evidenced by the sometimes quite sophisticated mods that are freely available to download. These range from increasing the realism, the visuals, the detail, the mechanics and adding new vessels. The experience of stalking a convoy, setting up the perfect shot and scoring a keel-breaking hit is thrilling. It comes with a cost, though as you are then mercilessly hunted by RN destroyers with their Asdic, then later sonar and depthcharged. That requires nerves of steels and careful manoevering of your sub to escape a yerrible fate. Fans of the movie "Das Boot" will instantly feel right at home with this game, and anyone who yet to delve into the world of simulation will be astounded at the attention to detail, the visuals and the feeling you are part of a greater conflict as ships above from your side (the Kriegsmarine) and the RN or USN battle it out with battleships, cruisers and aircraft carriers. A true classic to this day.
