Kalypso Media acquires Airline Tycoon II from Spellbound Entertainment

Kalypso Media announced today the acquisition of the worldwide name and publishing rights for Airline Tycoon II from Spellbound Entertainment. Kalypso is planning to release the sequel in the first quarter of 2011, with development being managed by its in-house studio, Realmforge.

"Following the success of Tropico 3 and the development of future titles including MudTV and Patrician, we are thrilled to be bringing another hugely popular and respected brand to market. Airline Tycoon II will further strengthen our line up for the first quarter of 2011," says Simon Hellwig, Global Managing Director Kalypso Media Group.

Operation Flashpoint to get patch and DLC, expected month's end

Publisher Codemasters has said they hope to update the game and give out new content at the same time for Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, which is by October end.

Their intention "is to align" the two to hopefully do the"whole thing in one." For the developer it's "not a lot of fuss" to work on new content, in fact it's "actually quite easy" to do; open-ended.

The first downloadable content for Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is due in "a matter of weeks," and the developers are trying out all sorts for the future. Perfect for expansion.

Codemasters' Sion Lenton confirms there will be "weapons packs, map packs" coming for sure, as a release is now "just the beginning" thanks to DLC. They're "already prototyping" more.

Developer 2D Boy of the physics-based puzzler World of Goo is celebrating one full year of the indie game's release, and runs a special 'sale time' promotion until October 19th.

This offer means you can pay "whatever" you want for the game, from a single cent to "a million dollars," and says it's even a chance for pirates "at redemption!" World of Goo on iPhone.

The closure of Microsoft Aces Studio, which had been making Flight Simulators since forever, has turned out to be "incredibly liberating" for ex-staffers as they've formed a new studio.

Cascade Game Foundry is a Washington-based developer, and they'll be reconsidering all their "preconceived notions," says Cascade's Rick Selby. Hardcore sim fans "critical foundation".

Now that Red Baron creator Damon Slye has all the legal papers back from Activision Blizzard, he's free to give us more of the classic flying antics. Something new planned.

The whole thing's a "strange boomerang" experience for him, they never expected "to see it again." A new Red Baron will have "emphasis on the human" so no quick, cheap thrill tricks.

Ubisoft date Heroes Over Europe for PC, retails September 22nd

The WWII dogfighter Heroes Over Europe, which sees our heroic flyboys do battle in the skies, is coming to PC a bit later that on console but will see release this month.

Console versions fire up those rotors next week, but PC will remain grounded. Heroes Over Europe very nearly crashed and burned, but Ubisoft saved the day from Atari pulling out.

Paradox Interactive have announced another expansion, this time for Hearts of Iron II that's being developed by the fan formed BL-Logic. No game mechanic is left untouched.

What started as a forum list of improvements for the WWII simulator, became "guidelines to the new game." By the projects end they had "replaced and enhanced" everything.

Ubisoft announces the fifth iteration of the submarine simulation series with Silent Hunter 5. Available for the PC in early 2010, Silent Hunter 5 ventures into uncharted territory and takes players behind the periscope of a German U-boat to take on the Allied Forces in famous battles across the vast Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.

Eidos announced today that Championship Manager 2010 will be released on Games for Windows across Europe from 11th September 2009.

There will also be a demo released on 14th August.

Electronic Arts announced today that The Sims 3 has stormed retail with sales hitting more than 1.4 million in its first week of release from June 2nd. This achievement marks it as the best-selling PC launch in EA's history.

"With more than a dozen press awards, strong reviewer scores and positive feedback from The Sims community, we are thrilled with the success of The Sims 3 launch and the early sales indicate that we have another hit on our hands," said Rod Humble, Head of the EA Play Label. "The volume of items created with The Sims 3 and downloaded online is a testament to how passionate The Sims players are. It's their world now, we can't wait to see everything players create and share."

NPD has released a list of the ten best-selling PC games in the United States for the week of February 22-28. This list contains retail sales only, with Dawn of War II taking top position, while WOW: Wrath of the Lich king takes second place.

Sales-tracking group NPD have released the latest PC software sales from the United States retailers, for the week of February 1st to 7th.

World of Warcraft still sits at the top, with The Sims 2 also making various appearances. Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 are also in the top 10, along with Call of Duty: World at War.

Oxygen Games announced today that it's developing Hysteria Hospital: Emergency Ward for the PC.

At Hysteria Hospital, life will prove to be a manic challenge. Players will have several levels of the hospital to navigate, and they will have to reach desperate patients and demanding doctors within a set period of time. The frenzy inside the hospital will increase as the game progresses with more and more demanding patients desperate to be cured!

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X Demo coming soon to consoles, PC Demo comes later

Ubisoft today announced an official Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X demo will be available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace tomorrow, while the PlayStation 3 demo will be available a day later on February 12th. The demo will also be available for the PC, but will be released much later on February 26th.

In this demo, players will dominate the skies for the first time and battle planes, tanks and amphibious assaults and have the opportunity to dogfight with other elite pilots in a stunning panoramic boss scene.

The Sims 3 Release Date Pushed Back

The Sims 3 was originally listed as a 20th February release, although last week a few European retailers started listing it for the first half of 2009.

More news came today when EA told Eurogamer that it is "evaluating the launch window".

Ubisoft reveals release dates for I am Alive and TOM CLANCY's H.A.W.X

Ubisoft has confirmed a few dates for several of its upcoming titles in a recent release schedule that was sent to Strategy Informer.

I am Alive is listed for Q1 2009 on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, although we will be double checking this date as it was originally thought to be released in Q2 2009. This date seems a bit too soon.

2008 was a fantastic year for gamers, and we will be looking forward to seeing what is in store for 2009, with the release of Resident Evil 5, Lord of the Rings: Conquest, Empire: Total War, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Ghostbusters, BioShock 2 and Overlord II among our personal favourites.
