Watch Dogs sold 4 million copies in first week

Ubisoft claims that its open-world spy thriller Watch Dogs has sold-thorugh 4 million units in its first week of sales. The announcement comes after news that the game broke the record for a new IP's first week sales in the UK.

Yesterday's post on the Ubiblog by Communications Manager Gary Steinman revealed the news. "The game is now the best-selling new IP at launch across the entire videogame industry," he writes, "with more than 4 million copies sold through in its first week."

It might have had a few teething problems on PC, but Ubisoft are still looking at an incredibly successful launch for their open-world spy game Watch Dogs.

Jumping straight to number one in the UK game sales charts, Watch Dogs smashed the record for a new IP's week one sales, selling 58% more copies than previous record holder LA Noire.

So reception to the PC version of Watch Dogs has been rather... muted, in certain corners. Once again the thorny issues of Ubisoft's DRM policy has reared its head, but players are also reporting various technical issues in-game.

In response to the criticism, Ubisoft’s Technical Director Sebastien Viard has posted a series of tweets covering the issue, ultimately confirming that the team are hard at work on a patch designed to fix the most common problems.

Unfortunately the launch of Watch Dogs hasn't gone smoothly for Ubisoft as the Uplay servers have been overwhelmed and suffering an authentication issue, which has had a knock-on effect with other titles.

If that wasn't bad enough, the PC version of Watch Dogs is also suffering terribly from framerate stutters on even high-end GPUs despite having graphical settings lowered.

It might not seem like the most fitting franchise match, but Ubisoft has announced that its free-to-play hack and slasher The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot will receive various bits of branded Watch Dogs content to mark the release of the open-world hacking game.

Said content will take the form of new weapons and clothing, a new castle theme and a version of Watch Dogs lead character Aiden's iconic bandana for each of the game's four classes.
