Firaxis Games' excellent looking XCOM: Enemy Unknown is coming to Xbox 360, PS3 and PC October 9th in US and 12th in Europe. There's also a pre-order bonus at retail giving us the Elite Soldier Pack.

That DLC gives us a classic XCOM soldier. There's also Deco packs which let us customise soldier armour with "several aesthetic upgrades" and colours. PC gets a special edition.

Firaxis Games' XCOM: Enemy Unknown is in homage to the original XCOM strategy formula, and the team in yet another developer diary explain how they're making it 'modern'.

While it's still turn-based, the battles 'appear real-time' with today's technology giving us greater freedom and control. XCOM: Enemy Unknown releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC this year.

Firaxis' new game, Enemy Unknown, started life as a "straight remake" of the original XCOM game

Speaking to Strategy Informer, Associate Producer Pete Murray talked about how has evolved since conception:

"The original prototype was very close to the original XCOM, almost a straight remake... but as Jake iterated on it, he realised there were certain ways of doing things in the game that were better..."

Gone are the days when pixels required a vivid imagination from the gamer because now everyone sort of expects to actually get to see everything, notes Firaxis' Sid Meier.

The Civilization creator "used to love to challenge" the player's imagination with "a few pixels in 16 colours" and try to convince them "they're ruling an empire" through the ages.
