3. Troubleshooting
DirectX Problems:
DirectX® 9.0b or later must be installed on your computer before you
can play Zoo Empire. You can install DirectX 9.0b provided with the
Zoo Empire CD, or you can download the software from Microsoft Windows
Update at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
If you encounter video or sound problems when using DirectX, go to
http://support.microsoft.com/support/directx/ for the latest
troubleshooting information.
You should also obtain the latest DirectX-compatible drivers from your
video or sound card manufacturer.
Windows 2000 Service Pack:
If you have problems running Zoo Empire on Windows 2000 and have
already updated your video drivers, try downloading the Windows 2000
Service Pack version 2 or later and install it on your machine.
Crashes and Lock-Ups:
When Zoo Empire starts, mouse cursor disappears and computer locks-up.
Your installed audio card drivers may not be compatible with DirectX.
Please obtain a DirectX 8.x or higher-compatible driver from your
sound card manufacturer.
The Installer keeps stalling after a certain percentage has completed.
Your hard drive could be out of space. Please free up additional space
by removing unwanted programs and reinstall Zoo Empire.
Files are possibly being copied to a corrupted area of your hard
drive. If this is the case, run the scandisk program and use the
Thorough option. After scandisk finishes and informs you that your
drive is free of errors, try installing Zoo Empire again.
There may be dirt or fingerprints on the CD-ROM disc itself. Examine
the bottom of the disc and clean it carefully using a soft, lint-free
cloth by wiping from the center of the disc (near the hole) towards
the outer edge in a straight line.
Zoo Empire crashes to the desktop with no error messages.
- Make sure the reading surface of the CD-ROM is clean (check for
scratches and smudges).
- Make sure the game has been installed properly.
- Make sure DirectX 9.0b has been installed properly.
- Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video and sound card,
and that they are DirectX 8.x-compatible - or higher.
- Make sure Virtual Memory is enabled on your system.
- Make sure you have run Scandisk and that no errors are reported.
- Run Disk Defragmenter.
- Clean out any old temp (.TMP) files from the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP or
C:\WINx\TEMP directory on your hard drive (you may use Windows
Explorer to do this).
- Make sure you do not have any resident anti-virus or third-party
Windows memory management utilities running prior to playing Zoo
Empire.
- Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the game.
- Try exiting the game, rebooting your machine, and re-entering the
game.
Note that if your system crashes to the desktop while playing Zoo
Empire, you should reboot your computer before starting a new session.
Otherwise, DirectDraw or DirectSound may be in a locked state, and the
game will be unable to use your video or sound hardware.
Video Problems:
If you are experiencing problems with your display, difficulties
launching the game, or experiencing crashes to the desktop, you may
need to make some changes to the Display Settings.
To adjust the Color Display Settings, please follow these steps:
1) Click on 'Start' in the Start Menu.
2) Click on 'Settings'.
3) Click on 'Control Panel'.
4) When the Control panel window comes up, double-click on the
'Display' Icon
and click on the 'Settings' tab.
Video card and sound card manufacturers often have updated drivers
which may improve performance and stability. Make sure your drivers
are up-to-date. Depending on what video cards you use, you may obtain
newer drivers from the following web sites:
http://www.nvidia.com
http://www.ati.com
Zoo Empire does not support Voodoo2 cards or below.
Motherboard Chipset:
If you continue to encounter performance-related problems and have
already ensured that your system is DirectX 9.0b-compatible, you
should check for the availability of updated motherboard chipset
drivers with your system manufacturer. Updating motherboard drivers
usually enhances the performance and functionality of your
controllers. Please consult with your system manufacturer for
assistance or your motherboard manual for driver updates and possible
solutions.
CDROM/DVD-ROM Problems:
Zoo Empire requires at least a Quad-Speed (4x) CD-ROM drive with
32-bit Windows 98/2000/XP drivers.
If you receive a "xxxxxx.xxx not found" error message when installing
or running Zoo Empire, this error message is usually attributed to the
CD-ROM drive using MS-DOS (16 bit) drivers instead of Windows (32 bit)
drivers. To verify that this is the cause of yout problems, open the
Control Panel by either clicking on the My Computer icon or clicking
on the Start button > Settings > Control Panel).
Once you are in the Control Panel window, click on the System icon,
then the Performance tab. You will see a summary of your computer's
performance status. One line will read "File System: 32-bit" and the
last line should mention that "Your system is configured for optimal
performance."
If you see a message saying "Drive X is using MS-DOS compatibility
mode," then contact your system vendor to obtain and install 32-bit
drivers for your CD-ROM drive.
Sound Problems:
If you experience skips while listening to the speeches in the game,
you should first check if you have the latest sound drivers installed
in your system. Although possible, we do not recommend using your
motherboard's on-board sound chip to play sound.
Appearance of Strange Polygons and Hardware Skinning:
If you experience strange polygons appearing while you play, you
should end your current game session, re-insert the Zoo Empire CD-ROM
and in the Autorun menu, click on the Video Settings option, and
disable Hardware Skinning.
