Review

We play Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories...

Cars! Guns! Gangs! Blood! Fighting! Chases. These are the very elements you currently need to have to come up with a blockbuster game. Grand Theft Auto’s original flavor never ceases to keep its fans voraciously playing and adding more followers by the day. Rockstar has launched Liberty City Stories on both PSP and PS2, surely giving its players a different break from the original GTA series.

Up the highway we go!
Welcome to Liberty City

The game is set in 1998, a few years back before GTA 3. Tony Cipriani is back in town like dog to its vomit. After taking a hiatus from his gangster activities, he goes back to report to his mob boss Salvatore Leone. If you are a GTA series enthusiast, you will find that the games connects plots and character gaps between San Andreas, Vice City and GTA 3 – with game play strikingly culled out from Vice City.

The game features improved draw distance and more people-y street, LCS may be considered as the dark horse of the GTA series. For a game that has not been complimented on its visual display, calling the screen a mess isn’t exactly helping.

This sure beats a police car chase
Taking cover and sniping away

The game graphically is very good, the mission given are just as great, LCS is a 100% free roaming game, so you can do what ever you want and don’t have to start the mission unless you really want to (good for game rebels). Additional rides include motor bikes to keep those chases at bay. New weapons also bring delight to the gamer. Cop chases can be annoying, yet fun at the same time due to the adrenaline rush it brings. It can be a bit annoying sometimes when the cops start chasing you but overall it is very fun. Game leveling is on the difficult side this time, though, so this is a good pick for those who love a challenge. However, they need to work on the swim skills of the character. The gamer gets caught near a body of water.

Cars are just as great: Police cars, police Enforcer, Esperanto, Moonbeam, Stallion, Taxi and Bobcat. Also, the Patriot and Sentinel are included.

Aside from the usual cursing, the sound has been quite good. Realistic sounds of car chases, road kill and exotic accents of some characters give you that feel of being in the middle of gangsta life. Soundtracks from promising and well-known artists also give the action that heart pumping energy.

Let’s get ready to rumble!
Jason, eat your heart out

Overall, this is a good game.

Top Gaming Moment:
Aside from fulfilling the mission and moving on to the next challenging level, bashing the chasing cops and shooting them to death nurses the rebel in every one of us. A bit morbid, but fun.
