Review

We play Singstar Rock Ballads...

I’m convinced SingStar is trying to take my life from me. Following my recent review of R&B which introduced me to the series for the first time, I’ve gone and discovered SingStar Rock Ballads (or rather it discovered my lack of vocal talent!).

To be honest I’m not the biggest Rock music fan out there and I was slightly sceptical about knowing what songs would be contained on this compilation. What greeted me when I loaded the game up was an array of powerful ballads and songs that possibly make this one of the best SingStar compilations to date.

Granted there are some strange inclusion as with any SingStar release including the Sugababes (they have this habit of popping up in most releases!) and you won’t perhaps regard some of the inclusions as ‘real rock’; not the screamo stuff of modern day society.

When you have Meatloaf and ‘I Would do Anything for Love’ you know you’ve got a classic compilation of 30 different songs ranging from Bostons ‘More Than A Feeling’ to Toto’s ‘Africa’. These are songs that demand to be sung as intensely as possible, testing your vocal chords to the ultimate limit.

We’re not quite sure why Mr Mister and Roxette have two songs each in the game but either way the songs contained are adequate hits that you can belt out, but we feel perhaps that licensing issues restricted two other artist choices.

Rock Ballads removes the trashy modern day music and is certainly one aimed at the older and more mature audience. No cheesy pop here, just pure big belters and the gratitude from scoring points becomes ever more of an achievement especially when you are playing in Battle mode against another person. And battles they will be, we’ve spent many a night vowing to beat the top scores; you just want to keep singing until your throat goes dry!

There is some slight disappointment by the inclusion of another poor Queen song in the form of ‘The Show Must Go On’ there are some slight dull additions. There are only so many times you can sing Nicklebacks ‘How You Remind Me’ without feeling bored. And why include Europe’s ‘Carrie’ and not the classic ‘Final Countdown’? Still not all the songs are obvious choices from the artists and this is possibly a good way at introducing people to a wider musical array.

Meatloaf’s favourite food? Meatloaf of course.
Cyndi Lauper and the ginger look

The usual SingStar format is all in-tact, nothing has changed from any of the other nine games in the series and all the usual modes are in-tact. If you have a problem with reading the lyrics which tend to be fairly simple to follow although there can be a few instances of confusion, those with a weaker knowledge of the song can warble any old crap into the microphone and as long as it is at the correct pitch you’ll score points. Multiplayer is the obvious strong point for the game and SingStar in general, and the choice of songs gives this even more edge especially if you fancy digging it out at the family party.

In conclusion SingStar Rock Ballads is possibly one of the best SingStar instalments to date with a great variety of music which people of all eras will recognize. It may not be rock at its finest but it certainly is music to your ears.

Top Game Moment: Discovering you ‘are’ the next Meatloaf after belting out ‘I Would do Anything for Love’!
