Rumour: EA Partners label to discontinue, Respawn's project unaffected

Publisher EA is shaking things up and among the casualties list is apparently the EA Partners label which saw third-party developers have their work signed up for distribution through EA's retail channels.

The likes of Crysis, Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Bulletstorm and Rock Band all passed through the program, but now it faces the chop in the pursuit of streamlining.

In our exclusive talk with Crytek big cheese Cevat Yerli he revealed that Crysis 3 is "clearer as an IP," as the team behind it embraced a "hunter theme" that touches both singleplayer and multiplayer.

It brings the third full instalment closer to the original game, he remarked, "as opposed to Crysis 2." That 'hunter's aspect' was the creative driving force for Crytek - birthing the "seven wonders".

Developer Crytek reveals that they already have plans in mind for the next Crysis after Crysis 3, but it won't be called 'Crysis 4' as "it would be misleading," given that Prophet's story concludes.

Calling it '4' would "imply the story just moves on," but it doesn't. The studio is looking into something "much more radical and new" for the future of the franchise; no pre-production yet.

Crytek believe CryEngine 3 already produces the same graphical output as Epic's Unreal Engine 4, despite the former being launched a number of years ago.

According to former Free Radical co-founder Steve Ellis, publishers refuse to stray from the Call of Duty template, chiefly because "pretty much every first person shooter loses money". This is something the developer discovered when trying to get Timesplitters 4 backed.
