Techland's new IP is Hellraid, co-op fantasy hack'n'slash for 90's fans
The first new IP from Techland since Dead Island is all about those feel good moments from the likes of Quake, Hexen, Diablo and Heretic back in the 1990s. The Polish studio is infusing co-op with fantasy.
They want Hellraid to feel like it was "made by guys in their '30s," touching on those simpler Quake and Hexen days. We choose between four classes and take on hordes of foes.

Dead Island publisher Deep Silver, new owners of Volition and the Saints Row IP, have described themselves as a "small, guerrilla tactics company," with COO Geoff Mulligan adding they 'don't want to go triple-A'.
Mulligan jokes that they're "much better than the Activisions, EAs, and Ubisofts" out there because, while they may be valued at billions, Deep Silver "make money." They also acquired Metro: Last Light.

We get into a chat with creative producer Alex Toplansky for Dead Island: Riptide and ask about the upcoming new island full of shuffling undead. Riptide isn't a sequel, he says, so there's no 'reinventing the wheel'.
The team want to be clear that fans are getting "more of the core gameplay" they enjoyed in the original Dead Island, but they did want to "add a lot of original stuff," so we get a whole new island.

Producer Sebastian Reichert for Techland's Dead Island: Riptide is trying to understand why their game is banhammered in Germany, when other violent action titles sail on through to retail.
Under Germany law if enemies are "human-like then you have a problem," said Reichert. Zombies are of course former humans, and hacking at them post-death is "mutilation of corpses." Big no-no.

The somewhat controversial, heavily emotional "Family" trailer for Dead Island caused a great deal of reaction and discussion when the video was released, but according to Deep Silver executive producer Guido Eickmeyer, it ultimately did not help the game garner 4M sales across three platforms.
Instead, he states, it was the co-op gameplay.
