Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Preview (PS3)

Following the low-rated Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam takes place afterwards and incorporates many of the Gundam series characters. Following closely with 2 different storylines (designated in ‘original’ and ‘official’ gameplay modes), this action RPG is a very different game than its predecessor.

With either 6 or 10 playable characters and their custom mobile suits, there is plenty of customization in looks, attacks and feel. Instead of being a mech simulator, DW is simply an RPG with Gundams in it. Though it generally feels like a beat-em-up, the game runs well and is kept simple.

Gameplay is controlled very similarly to any other RPG, with movement and camera control at the analog sticks and actions in the central button pad. Striking with the laser sword, firing with a small gun and special attack are all available, as well as combinations of each.

The special attack fits in nicely, charged by the destruction of enough enemies. It isn’t too hard to attain power to perform the attack, simply the right amount of enemies.
The remainder of controls are used for jumping, speed boost or resetting the camera. The simple design is easy to learn and remember.

Bonuses can also be found throughout the maps, including armor repairs, timed defense and attack enhancements. Plenty of these are hidden, and with time restraints per mission, as well as enemies dropping them upon destruction.

Little else is to be said about the title. So far it is the fastest selling PS3 game in Japan, with over 100,000 copies sold on the first day. That happens to be after Ridge Racer 7 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire, so little can be said about that. It also received a 33/40 Famitsu rating, but Crossfire also received a 32/40, and gathered terrible scores everywhere else. Due out in late August, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam does not play poorly in any way, but it has proven to be a button-smasher.
