Metal Gear Online goes offline in June

Konami has announced that the publisher is shutting down the servers for Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer spinoff of the popular series that was bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4, on the 21st June.

At one point, the game enjoyed 1.3M players, but the population has dwindled enough that it's not profitable for Konami to maintain the server.

Japanese servers shut to 'conserve'

Square Enix and the PlayOnline service have switched off their multiplayer server farms in order to save what power they can in Japan following the quakes.

Kojima Productions have also announced Metal Gear Online will be off in Japan as well. Square aren't charging for subscriptions to FFXI and FFXIV in April.

John Carpenter 'gave blessing' to Hideo Kojima over Solid Snake

Director John Carpenter, who made Escape from New York featuring Kurt Russell as one 'Snake Plissken', gave Hideo Kojima his "blessing".

Kojima-san had written to Carpenter asking him if he could use Snake as inspiration for Metal Gear Solid, and thus Solid Snake was born.
