Creative producer Shigenobu Matsuyama of Metal Gear Solid: Rising says they "don't really want" to dwell on the "Metal Gear saga" with Rising.
It's a spin-off and completely friendly to newcomers, you can play "without needing to know" all thats happened before. It would get too "tied up".

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima's next big project is an "adventure game" reveals Chiyomaru Shikura, a collaborating partner on the title.
Shikura-san is also working on the 3rd entry in a "conceptual science series," he teased. Right now they need to "hash this project out," apparently.

Look I made a play on words! Producer Shigenobu Matsuyama reveals that studio Kojima is "aiming for two" series to run for Metal Gear Solid.
The upcoming MGS: Rising is "not a side story," he says, with it set to become a series of "another standard." Less stealth and more action then?

John Carpenter 'gave blessing' to Hideo Kojima over Solid Snake

Director John Carpenter, who made Escape from New York featuring Kurt Russell as one 'Snake Plissken', gave Hideo Kojima his "blessing".
Kojima-san had written to Carpenter asking him if he could use Snake as inspiration for Metal Gear Solid, and thus Solid Snake was born.
