Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Preview

Continuing one of the most popular series on the PlayStation consoles, Future: Tools of Destruction follows Ratchet and Clank in another great adventure that promises to push the PS3 both in processing strain and triple-A titles. Playtesting the first level was, and we’re happy to say it, a blast.

FToD (like Resistance’s RFoM) begins with Ratchet and Clank, our overconfident, feline-like Lombax and cute, logical miniature robot, working on their air jet ski. An odd transmission from the proud and newly soiled Captain Qwark sends them on their way to adventure. What we don’t know, but soon will soon find out in the full release, is that the mass destruction taking place is all to eradicate the Lombax species, thrusting the story into Ratchet’s history.

The first thing to notice is that this game is not for adults specifically, nor is it just for children. It was made specifically for a wider audience, so expect Pixar-like humor that the whole family can enjoy. And, more importantly, you can let the kids play it without remorse.

This also means that controls are simple and well layered. Switching between secondary weapons is just like in Resistance; hold the triangle button and pick from the circle with the analog stick. Yet if the player is skilled enough, most enemies can be taken down with Ratchet’s wrench with little to no damage taken.

Gameplay, thusly, is a mix of button mashing and fast paced action. Don’t be confused, this is not about pushing every button, although doing that could work just as well. And that’s really the beauty of FToD; you can play it any way you like.

Of course, the graphics are amazing. Not realistic due to the series’ cartoonish nature, the entire map played on looks absolutely spectacular, and everything is alive and moving. We’ve already heard plenty of times how the world is alive, so given the opportunity, every part of the map is as worthwhile as the last. Sadly, all this is stuck at 720p/1080i.

The vast levels, incredible graphics and simple controls look like a winning combination, especially from a revered developer such as Insomniac Games. Coming out October 30th in the States and November 7th and 8th in Europe and Australia respectively, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction will be the next must have on the PS3.
