Report: THQ sold UFC license because latest game failed to break even, focusing on low cost AAA games

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter is reporting that THQ management told him that the reason the publisher sold the license to Electronic Arts is that the latest title, UFC Undisputed 3, failed to break even, despite selling 2M units worldwide.

Publisher THQ has revealed their financials for the fiscal year now passed and they record a loss of $136.1m, while net sales were in fact stronger at $802.3m.

Q4 '11 didn't perform as well as the previous year's, but Homefront is attributed as their 'primary drive' for success. The new IP has had a "solid start".

THQ seem to be doing well on the sports front.

Today they announced that they've extended their publishing deal with the UFC to last until 2018. THQ took the right to publish games for the sport back in 2007, and have so far done UFC Undisputed 2009 & 2010.

It's Konami's time to dish what they'll have on hand at this year's Tokyo Game Show, with Metal Gear Solid: Rising confirmed but is it playable?

There's no word if any of the titles will be hands-on or just new trailers. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be there, as will Konami partner games.

The lower than expected sales for UFC Undisputed 2010 has THQ a little jittery, and so they're "considering a longer" cycle for development.

The franchise isn't losing THQ's commitment said CEO Brian Farrell, they just want more time for each release to avoid it feeling too samey.
