The development kit behind The Witcher 2 has been released for free to the PC community by CD Projekt RED. It lets fans of the dark-RPG world tinker around with everything. The REDkit is in open beta.

It's designed to let a modder of any skill play around with the inner workings of the game, or perhaps even create your own entirely. The studio wants to arm gamers with amazing dev tools.

Sorry Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers but The Witcher 3 is exclusively next-gen hardware, and PC of course because that's "non-stop next-gen," remarked CD Projekt RED co-founder Marcin Iwinski.

While CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3 is set in an open world to be explored by Geralt, the studio isn't taking a typical "sandbox, mechanical solutions" approach to the gameplay - this is no Skyrim.

Every main quest and side distraction is being "hand-crafted very precisely," so as not to compromise "anything that we achieved" throughout the series. A big world needs "good stories."
