Beautiful Katamari Preview
For fans of previous Katamari games, Beautiful Katamari for the 360 is exactly the same as its prequels. The nonsensical gameplay and story return in the epic adventure where the objective is simply to roll over as many objects as possible and attach them to the ball players control, known as the Katamari.
Though originally believed to be an XBL Arcade title, Namco has indicated that BK will be a full fledged 360 title, which is very odd considering that it plays and feels just like an Arcade game. Everything about the game points to ‘arcade title’ but that hasn’t stopped Namco in this occasion.
Gameplay is simple: roll over every object that isn’t too big to roll over. Continue to do so under the time limit until either everything has been attached to you and the Katamari is the size of the level. Additional multiplayer features will include two player cooperative mode and up to four player versus mode. Little has been said about the multiplayer to date.
What was really bothersome is that it doesn’t look like a game for the 360. With the demo for Bioshock recently released, it’s hard to play BK and not wonder where the artistry is. It honestly looks like it would work even on a Gamecube. If the physics engine is included, maybe an original Xbox.
As for how enjoyable gameplay is, it really depends on the individual playing it. While plenty have exclaimed enjoyment for the series, cries of foul play against it run amuck. It isn’t hard to imagine how fun such a game would be on the Wii using dynamic controls and multiple players, on the 360 alone seems somewhat pitiful.
Set for release in September, this exclusive title may have plenty of trouble getting off the ground, especially if the price is at the current standard. However, it’s hard to conceive any money being lost on what looks and feels like a PS2 port. Still, fans of the original will enjoy the new and ever-so-slightly improved Beautiful Katamari.
