Def Jam: Icon Preview

The differences between the 360 version and PS3 version are noticeable enough to be mentioned, loudly perhaps. On the 360, loading times are twice as long, picture quality is lower (possibly in part to the HDMI vs. Component battle) and the controls are much less fluid than on the PS3. Even the main menu has visible differences. Still, the game is exactly the same otherwise. The following preview is (basically) the same as the PS3’s.

For anyone not familiar with the previous three Def Jam titles, it is basically some of your favorite hip-hop artists duking it out. Sounds like fun, right? For those unfamiliar, probably not. Who really cares to see and control some guys who probably don’t even know how to fight when there are plenty of games like DOA 4 and others where you deal with experts? These are tough questions to answer.

Thankfully, EA has released a demo of Def Jam Icon, the most recent installment of the Def Jam series. The small 360mb demo loads quickly with the starting menu of one option: throw down.

Both solo and verses modes have the same map and same characters which cannot be switched. It’s a small demo, so it’s understandable. Loading the level takes all of ten seconds and the fight starts immediately. No health bars, readings, or anything that blocks the screen in any way. Pure cinematic scenery only.

Fighting at a gas station with the escalade parked by the pump on one side and a beat up whatchamacallit on the other seems urban enough. The lettered buttons are the main attacks, with hard and quick hits, while the bumpers are fakes. The right trigger determines both throws and blocks (working in conjunction with the right analog stick) and the left trigger deals with laying down some beats.

Possibly the most useless, irrelevant part of the game, using the evolved form of an air guitar, your character can smash some mad skillz on the imaginary turntable. The sole purpose of this ability is to make the destructible parts of the map erupt. This makes it useless except at the right moment, almost like a special ability that needs to be charged. Useless generally, but great fun when done right.

The demo is pretty simplistic with only the one map and one playable character, Big Boi. Loading up the map gives a hyper-realistic gas station which looks stunning. Throw T.I. into the kwik-e-mart window and it’ll break. Throw him there again and the store owner will spray him with a fire extinguisher. Throw him enough times into a gas pump and it’ll break and explode.

The unexpectedly fun gameplay is promising. Graphically, the game is a winner. With added online play with XBL, 22 characters to choose from and 30 songs featured, the only downside is the weak 720p resolution. Just make sure you’re a fan of the music genre, or you may find the world a bit out of whack.
