Rumour: EA Partners label to discontinue, Respawn's project unaffected

Publisher EA is shaking things up and among the casualties list is apparently the EA Partners label which saw third-party developers have their work signed up for distribution through EA's retail channels.

The likes of Crysis, Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Bulletstorm and Rock Band all passed through the program, but now it faces the chop in the pursuit of streamlining.

Greg Coomer of Half-Life house Valve affirms the studio's uniquely empowering employee policy includes letting just a small handful of employees deciding to "push a button" and release.

He admits that "one person can ship anything", but the "work gets better if you just check with a couple of people" before setting it loose. Valve places tons of "courage and trust" in their staff.

The Cold Stream downloadable content for Left 4 Dead 2 that was released on PC and Mac today has been delayed for the Xbox 360, and priced at $7 USD.

Valve's business development director Jason Holtman explains how Gabe Newell, his boss, isn't his boss. Yeah, those crazy Valve guys and gals really do work without a dictator.

It's like they share ideas equally or something - oh wait, they do. Holtman says the bossless atmosphere "tends to work" when you resist looking for 'the leader'. "It's totally worth it."

A rumor sprang up yesterday that posited that Valve's project with Overkill Software, which developed Payday: The Heist, would be a prequel to Left 4 Dead. Valve's Chet Faliszek shot down that rumor, saying it was completely fabricated.
