Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Preview (Xbox360)

Considering how well the original Marvel: Ultimate Alliance did back in 2006, the sleeper hit finally has a sequel that aims to give us the same great gameplay with more characters, more weapons, more enemies and a bigger storyline. How big? The biggest in Marvel history.

For those who don’t know, a few years back Marvel released a series of comics called “Marvel Civil War”, which was about the fight between superheroes and against revealing their identities and openly accepting that they are weapons of mass destruction. Superheroes picked sides, with household names fighting each other based on political and social beliefs. Ultimate Alliance 2 bases itself on that storyline, giving players the choice of who they want to play as, the heroes who take off their masks, or those who refuse to.

These two groups of superheroes are both playable, each with their own story and each with a set of other heroes they can fight alongside, though some are simply incompatible because of the story. Captain America refuses to reveal his identity, though Wolverine believes otherwise. Thus, the two will never join forces in this game. With 24 playable characters, there are plenty of fighting techniques to employ, so this shouldn’t be a problem.

One of the biggest changes to this sequel is making nearly all objects and items in the world weapons. Any character can pick up a crate, box, barrel or anything else that isn’t attached to the ground and smash their foes with it. The stronger the character, the larger the object they can attack with. Juggernaut, a newly playable character, can hoist and throw cars.

The next big improvement is fusion attacks, which combine two heroes’ abilities to perform attacks that are extremely powerful. Iron Man can shoot his laser and Wolverine will reflect it at all nearby enemies, or Thor will create a whirlwind and The Human Torch will make it turn into a fire tornado. These attacks, while devastating and very cool, are very necessary thanks to the next improvement.

And what is that? Having dozens of enemies on-screen simultaneously. While we don’t know the precise number, there can be over 30 enemies on screen at any given point of time, all of which are attacking the four heroes on screen. This means teamwork and using fusion attacks are vital for the success of the team.

One more thing: all game progress achieved for players, both hosts and friends who join an online cooperative match, is saved for each player. Also, Deadpool is a playable character, and one of his specialties is to talk directly to players with witty quips, insults and generally unnecessary yet diabolically amusing banter.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 comes out this September for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
