The recent cancellation of, Tiberium, a first person shooter set in the Command & Conquer universe has given industry analysts plenty of grist for the mill. A recent Gamasutra article shows that no one really knows what it means to Electronic Arts or the industry as a whole.

The article quotes Mike Hickey, an analyst for Janco Partners, when he said that EA lacks "management execution and/or product quality," and added that the cancellation "damages new management's credibility." The same article goes on to quote Michael Pachter, an analyst for Wedbush Morgan who gives a contrary opinion when he stated that the cancellation "goes a long way toward preserving the quality of the overall lineup."

In an extensive Q&A with Cliff Bleszinski, Design Director for Epic, Develop revealed that the primary focus for the entire Epic organization will be the Gears of War franchise. Bleszinski said "The person who is savvy enough to upgrade their PC and buy decent video cards, are the same people who know about bit torrent and all other means to pirate PC games. So the high-end computer games are suffering on the PC." He added, "Unreal Tournament III is a game we really care about and it reviewed very well. But Gears is now our primary franchise."

D3 have recently announced a brand new IP set to ship in the first quarter of 2009. Known as Eat Lead: The Return Of Matt Hazard, the game is a Gears-style third-person shooter with a slyly irreverent sense of humour.

Starring the titular Mr. Hazard, the game’s story has been written by 2008 Writer’s Guild Award winner Dave Ellis of Dead Head Fred fame. Eat Lead will lampoon certain videogame conventions and lovingly homage some of the dev team’s favourite games, past and present (see Matt Hazard’s back catalogue shots).
