The development kit behind The Witcher 2 has been released for free to the PC community by CD Projekt RED. It lets fans of the dark-RPG world tinker around with everything. The REDkit is in open beta.

It's designed to let a modder of any skill play around with the inner workings of the game, or perhaps even create your own entirely. The studio wants to arm gamers with amazing dev tools.

In an interview with Game Informer, the writers behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt detail more about how the game starts off, and why Geralt is searching for his "long lost love" out in the world.

A number of past characters will also be making appearances, but they're in a "different situation" from their Witcher 2 days which followed on from a terrible war. Spoilers abound.

CD Projekt RED wants to blow our Witcher socks off, and the best way to do that they reckon is to take Geralt and plop him in an open world - one that's allegedly 20% bigger then Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Not only that but the White Wolf no longer panders to factions - he's his own Witcher once again, having regained his memories and hunger for fighting monsters. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is out in 2014.

The Witcher 2 dev CD Projekt RED has just announced the third iteration of the in-house REDengine. The studio bemoans RPG approaches of a 'strong story, weak world' or a 'big world, simple story'.

With REDengine 3 they "combine the positive aspects of both" to deliver an "open environment with a complex, multi-thread story." The engine is "tailor-made" to CD Projekt's RPG needs.
